Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has unveiled a detailed plan to transform Gaza into a thriving economic hub by 2035, aiming for peace and prosperity in the region.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has introduced an ambitious vision for Gaza's future, dubbed "Gaza 2035." Outlined in a 9-page PowerPoint presentation, the plan imagines a transformed Gaza, evolving from conflict to a center of trade and economic prosperity, fully integrated into the Middle East economy. The plan envisions utilizing Gaza's strategic location on key trade routes between Cairo and Baghdad, and Europe and Yemen, to establish it as a major trade hub. Netanyahu's office has outlined a three-phase approach to achieve self-governance and economic revitalization for Gaza.
The initial phase involves a 12-month period dedicated to humanitarian aid and the establishment of safe zones across Gaza, from north to south. This will be followed by a 5-10 year reconstruction phase, to be overseen by a coalition of Arab states including Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt, Bahrain, Jordan, and Morocco. This phase will see the creation of the Gaza Rehabilitation Authority (GRA), responsible for the reconstruction and financial management of Gaza, as detailed by The Jerusalem Post.
The final stage of the plan, termed "Self-governance," proposes a gradual transfer of power to either a local Gaza government or a unified Palestinian government, including the West Bank. This transfer is contingent upon successful deradicalization and demilitarization efforts and requires agreement from all involved parties.

The proposal comes against the backdrop of intense scrutiny and criticism from pro-Palestinian groups and demonstrations on college campuses, with accusations against Israel of committing genocide in Gaza. Additionally, many Democrats have urged President Biden to adopt a stronger stance against what they view as Israel's aggressive tactics in the region.
Netanyahu's "Gaza 2035" represents a hopeful yet controversial vision for the future, aiming to foster peace through economic development. However, the success of such a plan is uncertain, as Palestinians have historically rejected similar proposals, including past attempts at a two-state solution.
