In Coronaville, there are countless businesses that have been offered an investment vehicle to protect their businesses. Invest in this vaccine or risk your business or company from going bankrupt. The UK-based Wellcome Trust has a gun to your head: invest or lose the world economy and your business. The Wellcome Trust advertises itself as a charity. How beneficent.

Wellcome Trust urges firms to donate £6bn for Covid-19 research

It is 'the best investment your business can make', says medical research charity

The Wellcome Trust is calling on big businesses to donate $8bn (£6.4bn) for research into developing diagnostic tests, therapies and vaccines to tackle the coronavirus pandemic.

Jeremy Farrar, the director of the London-based medical research charity, said a huge investment in scientific research was "the only exit strategy" to save millions of lives and drag the global economy out of an inevitable recession.

Farrar said that while businesses and governments had acted fast to help support staff and keep the global economy ticking along, the only long-term solution was to quickly develop vaccines and treatments.

"The only exit strategy for this that I see is the development of diagnostics, therapies and vaccines," he said. "That's the only way we can return to normal."

On a conference call later on Tuesday, Farrar will tell the chief executives of the world's biggest companies that pledging funds to the Covid-Zero fund "is the best investment your business can make today”.

He said: "Businesses and governments are rightly concerned with tackling immediate concerns – how to support staff, keep trading and bolster economies. But we also need a way out of this pandemic as fast as possible."

Farrar, who is an infectious disease researcher as well as director of the Wellcome Trust, said: "Drugs, vaccines and rapid diagnostics are the only way we have of saving lives, bringing this pandemic to an end and preventing it reappearing. This is the only exit strategy – but we do not have the funding we need to execute it."

AI Weekly: The sudden speed of technological change in a coronavirus world

COVID-19 waits for no one, and the speed of its spread has forced the world to act quickly. From world governments to individual households, all of sudden everyone has had to scrap plans, make new ones, and try to hang on to some kind of new normal as the pandemic causes more unexpected and rapid shifts.

Looking at the tech world, it's been quite a sight to watch everyone move so fast. As I wrote a few weeks ago, there's been a digital flotilla of tech people focusing on, and turning their expertise towards, solving the problems related to COVID-19. But with increased speed comes increased noise, which is a mixed blessing.

Like (I presume) all tech journalists right now, my inbox is more full than usual. It's brimming with endless pitches for chatbots to help give people answers about COVID-19 and even help triage who has what symptoms. There's been an explosion in apps designed to track the spread of the coronavirus. There are pitches about robots and drones and autonomous vehicles that help in hospitals and deliver supplies. We're being told about all sorts of AI tools that allege to help medical providers diagnose COVID-19 in patients. Pitches about just about any company, product, or service that could conceivably be related to remote work has come our way.

There are also uplifting pitches about how this or that company is giving away its product or service for free, or adapting it for a selfless purpose to help people with the struggles they're facing in the wake of job losses or health scares, or marshaling resources to perform much-needed research.
