During this period, Chubais was a key figure in introducing market economy and the principles (when did privatization ever become principled?) of private ownership to Russia after the fall of the Soviet Union. At that time, Russia was like a big fully stocked store when a hurricane hit and looted wholesale.

A 2004 survey conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers and the Financial Times named Chubais "the world's 54th most respected business leader." It clearly helps when you own the media and that media favors oligarchs. Currently, he is the head of the Russian Nanotechnology Corporation (RUSNANO). He has been a member of the Advisory Council for JPMorgan Chase since September, 2008 and a member of global board of advisers at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) based in the US since October, 2012. After the bomb was detonated, his chauffeured BMW and the escorting Jeep occupied by Chubais' body guards, were sprayed with Kalashnikovs. Somehow no one was killed in the assassination attempt.
