But it’s been on the rocks for a while now. On Tuesday, the government “unfriended” and “unfollowed” DND, changed the locks on the door, and cut up the credit card. Then they threw the brass under the bus, and drove back and forth a few times for good measure. Defence Minister Peter Mackay looked like the friend of both caught in the middle, perhaps under suspicion by both parties of wearing the other’s jersey. … Barring that, as ugly as the Auditor-General’s report was, it may have been the next-best scenario for the Harper government to take the inevitable blow, pivot and try to move on. Whether this will work or not remains to be seen, of course. Opposition leaders will try to ensure that more forensic work is done, and that ministers are found to have deliberately misled the House. Jilted parties over at DND may fill up brown envelopes with damning information and litter the press gallery with them. For the moment, though, the government survived Tuesday’s beating in part because they put one of their very best people, Rona Ambrose , front and centre. She fielded angry questions with a steady, serious tone. She offered no partisan bluster – so often done these days in the face of attack, but something that invariably makes a problem bigger rather than smaller. Instead she came across as someone with no affection for DND and no doubt about what her responsibility was. Her recent track record as steward of a huge naval procurement, which was remarkably free of controversy, is an important piece of context here as well.Standing back from the short-term, cut-and-thrust opportunities and consequences of this issue, it’s hard not to feel that the idea of accountability is badly eroded. There was a time that an Auditor-General’s report like this would have been received by a prime minister, an apology would have been offered to Parliament and the public, and at least one senior resignation would have been tendered. Certainly as Official Opposition leader, Mr. Harper himself would have expected no less.”
“The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II is a family of single-seat, single-engine, fifth generation multirole fighters under development to perform ground attack, reconnaissance, and air defense missions with stealth capability. The F-35 has three main models; the F-35A is a conventional takeoff and landing variant, the F-35B is a short take off and vertical-landing variant, and the F-35C is a carrier-based variant. The F-35 is descended from the X-35, the product of the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program. JSF development is being principally funded by the United States, with the United Kingdom and other partner governments providing additional funding. The partner nations are either NATO members or close U.S. allies. It is being designed and built by an aerospace industry team led by Lockheed Martin. The F-35 took its first flight on 15 December 2006. The United States intends to buy a total of 2,443 aircraft to provide the bulk of its tactical airpower for the US Air Force, Marine Corps and Navy over the coming decades. The United Kingdom, Australia, Italy, Canada, Netherlands, Norway,Turkey, Israel, and Japan all will equip their air and/or naval forces with the F-35. However, the Japanese have warned that they may halt their purchase if the unit costs increase. Similarly, Canada indicated it is not fully committed to purchasing the aircraft. The United States is projected to spend an estimated US$323 billion for development and procurement on the F-35 program, making it the most expensive defense program ever. The total lifecycle cost for the entire American fleet is estimated to be US$1.51 trillion over its 50-year life, or $618 million per plane. Testifying before a Canadian parliamentary committee in 2011, Rear Admiral Arne Røksund of Norway similarly estimated that his country's 52 F-35 fighter jets will cost $769 million each over their operational lifetime … While the actual JSF development contract was signed on 16 November 1996 [approximately one month before the NORAD Santa rape and murder of JonBenet ‘Whose DNA?” Ramsey], the contract for System Development and Demonstration (SDD) was awarded on 26 October 2001 to Lockheed Martin, whose X-35 beat the Boeing X-32. Although both aircraft met or exceeded requirements, the X-35 design was considered to have less risk and more growth potential. The designation of the new fighter as "F-35" is out-of-sequence with standard DoD aircraft numbering, by which it should have been "F-24". It came as a surprise even to Lockheed, which had been referring to the aircraft in-house by this expected designation.”

On 19 December 2008, Lockheed Martin rolled out the first weight-optimized F-35A (designated AF-1). Saudi Arabia has bought Typhoon aircraft from BAe Systems, and has a maintenance and support contract with the firm. Prince Andrew has spoken out in defence of Saudi Arabia before. According to the Wikileaks cables, he railed at the Serious Fraud Office and the “idiocy” that allowed it to almost scuttle an arms deal with the country. Leaked cables from the US ambassador to the former Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan, written in October 2008, said the prince “was referencing an investigation, subsequently closed, into alleged kickbacks a senior Saudi royal had received in exchange for multi-year, lucrative BAe Systems contract to provide equipment and training to Saudi security forces”. .. But Andrew has vowed not to cancel his trip to Saudi Arabia, understood to be scheduled for next month, although plans to visit Tunisia on the tour have been dropped. The trip will be called off only if the wave of political instability which has already swept aside regimes in Egypt and Tunisia, and has sparked civil war in Libya, spreads to the Arabian peninsula. As part of his Presidential Field election campaign, McConnell is now asking for FBI and Secret Service protection until he has had an adequate opportunity to neutralize the source of the death threat – apparently sent over Lockheed Martin’s Federal Bridge – and the sponsors of the F-35 FADEC FADEOUT procurement fraud on the United States and its allies.
