Islam is seen as a system of religious totalitarianism that cannot be reformed, one that suppresses freedom, creativity, and the pursuit of wisdom. Islam stands accused of erasing or distorting the pre-Islamic cultural and philosophical legacy of Iran for example, while falsely claiming credit for achievements inherited from older civilizations. By enforcing rigid textual authority and dogma, Islam is viewed as hostile to true intellectual progress, scientific advancement, and authentic spirituality, functioning instead as an instrument of control and cultural domination. This is what is on the ascendency in American cities. It is hard to get figures on the Muslim population of Dearborn, Michigan but the estimates are around 50,000. The city of Philadelphia has a Muslim population estimated at 200,000. Overall, the Muslim population is expected to go through rapid growth in America in the coming years.
