An Occult History of Intelligence

Every intelligence agency is haunted by the occult. This is not an accident of history, but the essence of what it means to conceal, to surveil, to know in secret. From the earliest dawn of civilization, the guardians of knowledge were indistinguishable from the priests of mystery cults. The Egyptian temple-scribes, Mesopotamian astrologer-priests, and Magi of ancient Iran each played the role of proto-intelligence officers: observing the skies, recording omens, encoding political and military strategy into hieroglyphs or cuneiform, whispering counsel into the ears of kings. These figures occupied the liminal zone between heaven and earth, interpreting signs, guarding revelations, and shaping the fate of empires. What we today call "intelligence" was once simply initiation into the mysteries – a gnosis reserved for the few.
