The Mayflower was built by Allen E. Walker, the land developer behind Brookland and other residential neighborhoods of Washington. Nicknamed the "Grande Dame of Washington" at its opening in 1925, the hotel was said to contain more gold trim than any other building except the Library of Congress. An extensive renovation completed in 1988 uncovered decorative effects, including a skylight, which had been covered up due to blackout regulations during World War II. The original interior design included four over life-sized portraits of the first four presidents by painter and muralist Louis Grell of Chicago.
Shortly after opening, the Mayflower hosted a ball for the presidential inauguration of Calvin Coolidge. Although Coolidge himself never arrived, the hotel has sponsored a ball every Inauguration Day since. Franklin D. Roosevelt worked on his famous "We have nothing to fear but fear itself" inaugural address while a guest. His successor Harry S. Truman declared his intention to seek a full term in 1948 at a dinner at the Mayflower, and resided there for the first 90 days of that term while the White House was undergoing renovations. The Mayflower's lounge, Town & Country, has long been a social center for Washington's elite. FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover was said to lunch there daily with Clyde Tolson for over twenty years. In 1975, the Mayflower was the site of former Peace Corps and Office of Economic Opportunity director Sargent Shriver's formal announcement that he would run for President of the United States.
The hotel came into the spotlight several times in relation to political-sex scandals. President Kennedy's supposed mistress Judith Campbell Exner was established in the hotel and supposedly sneaked into the White House when his wife was away. Monica Lewinsky was staying there when her affair with Bill Clintonwas in the news.[6] The Mayflower was also the location where Lewinsky had been photographed with President Clinton at a campaign event not long before the 1996 election; this photograph would become an iconic component of the media coverage of the scandal.[7]
On March 10, 2008, The New York Times reported that New York Governor Eliot Spitzer had on the evening of February 13patronized a high class prostitution service called Emperors Club VIP[8] and met for over two hours with a $1,000-an-hour call girl in room 871 of the Mayflower Hotel, where Spitzer registered under the pseudonym George Fox, but with his own Fifth Avenue Manhattan address.[9][

INDIANAPOLIS -- He collected shards of evidence in the crater left by a truck bomb that ripped through the World Trade Center a decade before the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
He discovered bomb-making notes and materials in the Unabomber's small Montana cabin.
He headed a team investigating the bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City.
He trained police officers around the U.S. on how to identify and deal with bombs.
And he testified in dozens of criminal cases in the U.S. and abroad, helping prosecutors send terrorists to prison.
Now, it is bomb expert Donald John Sachtleben who is heading to prison — a surprise ending to a distinguished FBI career brought down by child pornography and leaking classified information.
The Carmel, Ind., man, 55, pleaded guilty Monday in a deal with federal prosecutors that calls for him to be sentenced to almost 12 years in prison, including 43 months on national security-related charges and 97 months on child pornography charges.
In the end, it may be those transgressions that define Sachtleben.
Until an Illinois child porn inquiry last year pointed investigators to a computer in the Hamilton County home of Sachtleben, his legacy appeared tied to his role in helping solve some of the most notorious terrorist cases in U.S. history.
Sachtleben and his family, through his attorney, declined to comment but issued a short statement Monday.
"I am deeply sorry for my actions," Sachtleben said in the statement. "While I never intended harm to the United States or to any individuals, I do not make excuses for myself. I understand and accept that today's filings start the process of paying the full consequences of my misconduct, and I know that the justice system I once served so proudly will have its say."
High-profile cases
Sachtleben joined the FBI as a special agent in 1983. His first assignment with the agency, according to a biography posted online, was in Pittsburgh, "where he conducted foreign counterintelligence and counter terrorism investigations."
His specialization in bombs began in 1985, when he transferred to the FBI's office in San Francisco. It was a career move that thrust Sachtleben, over the next two decades, into some of the nation's biggest terrorism cases.
In 1993, he was among experts who pored over the crater left by a truck-bomb blast that ripped through the World Trade Center, a harbinger of the seemingly unimaginable tragedy that would follow eight years later.
Two years later, Sachtleben would again be one of the lead investigators in a bombing that captured the attention of the nation — the April 19, 1995, blast that sheared off the north side of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, killing 168 people.
The next year, on April 3, 1996, Sachtleben was again in the national spotlight. He was among a group that served a search warrant at a remote cabin where Theodore Kaczynski, the Unabomber, had lived in a remote section of Montana for more than 20 years.
Sachtleben filed an affidavit in federal court detailing results of a search of the hand-built, 10-by-12-foot cabin.
"When agents knocked on the door," Sachtleben wrote, "Theodore John Kaczynski answered and was removed so that the search could begin."
"During the search," Sachtleben wrote, "I observed chemicals and other materials that, in my opinion, are designed and intended for use in manufacturing a destructive device."
Sachtleben also reported finding notebooks that contained diagrams and notes about making pipe bombs, as well as materials from which bombs could be made.
He served as a team leader in the probes of three international bombings: a 1996 blast at the Khobar Towers in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia; the 1998 bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya; and the 2000 blast in Yemen that hit the U.S.S. Cole at the port of Aden.
Following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Sachtleben helped investigate the crime scene in Somerset County, Pa., where United Airlines Flight 93 crashed. And in 2004, he was coordinating forensic examiner for all evidence submitted to the FBI lab in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks.
Sachtleben concluded his FBI career in Indianapolis, where he transferred in January 2007 to serve as the state bomb technician coordinator for the agency. He retired from the FBI in September 2008 and started his own business, Raptor Consulting, and continued working for the agency as a contractor.
Sachtleben's role in the high-profile terrorist cases brought him into the media eye. He was often quoted in news accounts detailing the findings of investigations.
But it wasn't until fall 2009, according to federal court documents, that he developed a "source" relationship with an Associated Press reporter.
Sachtleben's leaks to that reporter — which sparked a sweeping federal investigation and questions about the government's ability to seize phone records from journalists — would not come to light for nearly three years.
And it was a child pornography investigation, not a national security probe, that ultimately brought down the highly regarded, retired FBI agent.
The child pornography probe began in May 2012 when federal prosecutors in Indiana traced images to a computer at Sachtleben's $670,000 Crooked Stick Golf Club home. As part of that investigation, Sachtleben's cellphones and computers were seized and examined.
Information found on Sachtleben's phone and computer quickly helped federal officials tie the retired FBI agent to a high-profile leak of classified CIA information.
Initially, Sachtleben's contact with the AP reporter focused on his contract work at the FBI's National Improvised Explosives Familiarization training program. The relationship "quickly developed," court records show, and their exchanges grew beyond the NIEF program.
From January 2010 until early May 2012 — through emails, texts and phone conversations — Sachtleben provided the reporter "information about explosives used in terrorist plots or attacks and the FBI's analysis of such explosives."
"In doing so," court records say, "Sachtleben repeatedly requested (the reporter) to keep his true identity and his relationship with (the reporter) protected and confidential."
The leaks that ultimately led to charges against Sachtleben came less than two weeks before he was arrested on the child pornography charges.
Leak is traced
ABC World News Tonight had reported on April 30, 2012, that the government suspected al-Qaida was developing a surgically implanted body bomb that would escape detection at airport security checkpoints.
Shortly after that report, the AP reporter sent a text message to Sachtleben.
"Al-Asiri is up to his old tricks. I wonder if ur boys got a hold of a cavity bomb," the reporter asked.
"Yikes," Sachtleben responded a minute later. "Remind me to bring sum purell to the lab."
The FBI scheduled a news conference the next day and the reporter texted Sachtleben. He wanted to know if his source knew what was coming.
"Hmm. Methinks the 10am news conf may be related," the reporter texted Sachtleben, apparently referring to their exchanges the day earlier about the report on "body" bombs.
"Ah!" replied Sachtleben, who was preparing to board a flight from Indianapolis International Airport to Washington, where he was scheduled to work at the FBI lab the next day.
A minute later, Sachtleben sent the reporter another text: "Just abt to take off. Will b curious to c coverage when i land at dulles. Hope that tsa doesn't get out the rubber gloves and ky."
Three hour later, Satchleben sent the reporter another text. He had seen the coverage of the FBI news conference. It was to announce the arrests of five men in Cleveland who were charged with plotting to bomb a bridge, not the al-Qaida case.
"Got that one wrong," Sachtleben apologized. "A lil surprised they r wrkn 24 hr shfts cuz of those mutts. Still mght be sumthin else brewin. Will find out tomorrow."
The next day, Sachtleben — who retained his top secret security clearance as a contractor — went to the FBI lab. At 10:25 a.m., he called the reporter about a bomb recovered in connection with a Yemen-based group's plan to blow up a U.S.-bound airliner in the Arabian Peninsula.
Within hours of that call, the reporter and another reporter from AP contacted multiple government agencies and stated they had classified information about the bombing investigation.
On May 7, the AP reporter published articles on the thwarted bombing plot and
recovery of the so-called "underwear" bomb.
Five days later, Sachtleben was arrested on the federal child pornography charges”

Completed in 1892 in time for the World's Columbian Exposition, the hotel initially offered luxury apartments for permanent residents and temporary rooms for visitors. From 1928 to 1932 Al Capone made the hotel at 2135 S. Michigan Avenue his gangland headquarters, an association that the hotel's reputation never escaped. Eventually converted to a brothel and low-rent residential hotel, it closed in 1980.
