Explosives training may have caused Lithgow bushfire
The Australian military says it is investigating whether a major bushfire was linked to an explosives training exercise, as firefighters battled blazes that have destroyed or damaged 300 homes.
The defence department has launched an investigation to see if a bushfire at the western foot of the NSW Blue Mountains was caused by training activity [organized by .
The Rural Fire Service said some 85 fires were burning across New South Wales state, with about 20 of them uncontained despite Saturday's cooler weather conditions.
As it happened: NSW bushfire emergency Day 3
Among the major fires was one burning between the towns of Lithgow and Bilpin some 80 kilometres (50 miles) northwest of Sydney, which intensified after burning through 30,000 hectares (74,000 acres) and reportedly destroying some properties.
The Australian Defence Force said it was investigating the circumstances of the fire near Lithgow, which began on defence land.
"The fire started on 16 October, the same day that Defence personnel were conducting an explosive ordnance training activity," it said in a statement.
"Defence is investigating if the two events are linked.
"Our thoughts are with those who have lost property or whose property is threatened by these devastating fires," it added.
Firefighters are battling bushfires across New South Wales, which could take weeks to fully overcome, particularly with more hot and gusty weather forecast for as soon as Sunday.
One man has already died while trying to protect his home on the Central Coast north of Sydney, possibly succumbing to a heart attack, but authorities are hopeful no other people are unaccounted for in the blazes.
The fires took hold in warm and windy conditions on Thursday and the worst affected areas have been in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney, where some 193 properties were destroyed and 109 damaged in the towns of Springwood and Winmalee.
New South Wales Rural Fire Service Deputy Commissioner Rob Rogers said Saturday's conditions were a "pause" but that the fire perimeter stretched for more than 500 kilometers.
"We're by no means out of the woods," he told national broadcaster ABC.
"It's just calmed down a little bit and obviously we're bracing ourselves for these worsening conditions."
Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said some of the fires were so big they would take some time to completely extinguish.
"Firefighters will be working on these fires for weeks," he said.
"It's all about reducing the risk of these fires to breach containment lines and run under hotter, drier, windier condition over coming days."”
“Initiative in Ranges

The management of live firing field training areas is just one of the many specialist services provided by Serco Sodexo Defence Services on the Defence estate.
SSDS manages millions of hectares of military ranges in partnership with Defence and employs qualified managers, operators and clerks at to maintain and manage range bookings, safety coordination, pyrotechnics, small arms and artillery, air support and air space [Skynet] coordination.
At the Mount Stuart Training Area (MSTA) in Townsville, the Department of Defence sought SSDS’ assistance in re-opening two sneaker ranges that had been closed in 2012, to allow access to the range for non-Infantry units. The main areas to be addressed were in relation to safety and the removal of potential hazards. This required the removal of several large rocks, excessive vegetation and the re-marking of target markers to ensure they were safely inside the trace.
In a short time frame of just one week, SSDS Range Operator, Jason Trass and RCO SGT Giles Blackman, determined a course of action to ensure the works were completed on time and to required standards.
The team worked tirelessly over a six day period to complete the works, usually not carried out by MSTA Range staff, including slashing fire lanes to the targets, removing boulders and re-marking targets. The team, consisting of Morrie Dempster, Mathew Sheppard, Bryan Parnaby, Robert Krievans, Daniel Huggett, Ben Swancutt, David Hall, Michael Castilla, Brett Parker and Matthew Boland could be seen at the sneaker range at every opportunity to ensure the task was completed on time.
For their great display of teamwork and initiative, the team was nominated in the SSDS Star Performers reward and recognition program for the efforts in collaborating with the customer and ensuring a timely outcome. The team received personal thanks from MAJ Paul Cosgrove (RTAM), Mr John Web (National Range Inspector) and SGT Giles Blackman (RCO MSTA) for their outstanding efforts.”
“The [Sodexo] company was launched in 1966 by Pierre Bellon (Chairman) in Marseille, France, initially serving company restaurants, schools and hospitals under the name Société d'Exploitation Hotelière (English: Hotel Services Corporation). Today Sodexo is on the Fortune Global 500 list[3] and the second largest employer among all French multi-national corporations.
Throughout the 1970s, the company expanded in France and internationally; first in Belgium, then Africa, and finally the Middle East. After an initial public offering on the Paris Bourse in 1983, the firm continued its expansion into North America, South America, Japan, South Africa, and Russia.
Between 1995 and 2001, Société d'Exploitation Hotelière's holding company changed its name to Sodexho Alliance, and the company forged alliances with Gardner Merchant, Partena, Sogeres, Wo od Dining Services and Universal Ogden Services. In 2000 Sodexho Alliance became the leader in remote site management after a merger with Universal Ogden Services.[4]
In 1998, Sodexho merged with Marriott Management Services, at the time one of the largest food services companies in North America. Included in the merger was a name change to Sodexho Marriott Services. The merger helped the company become one of the largest food services providers in America.[4] [and allegedly position pyro-technicians in the Marriott World Trade Center Hotel WTC#3 for the 9/11 demolition of the TwinTowers]
In 2002, Sodexho was listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
In 2005, Michel Landel was appointed Chief Executive Officer, succeeding Pierre Bellon, who continues as Chairman of the Board of Directors.
In the summer of 2006, the company made headlines for concluding a deal with retired NBA Hall of Famer and entrepreneur, Earvin Magic Johnson and Magic Food Provisions, a subsidiary of Magic Johnson Enterprises. The initiative includes a marketing agreement and the formation of SodexoMAGIC, LLC, a new joint venture that is 51 percent owned by Johnson.[5]
Since September 2007, its United States operations have been headed by President and CEO George Chavel, who replaced Richard Macedonia.
In 2007, Sodexo launched its catering arm in United Kingdom schools, using the brand name "For you...".
The DiversityInc Top 50 Companies for Diversity is the leading assessment of diversity management in corporate America and globally.[6] In 2010, Sodexo ranked number 1. According to the report,[7] Sodexo “has led every other company in its ability to implement measure and assess strong internal diversity initiatives”[8]
Sodexo entered into two new partnerships in 2010: the first one with United Coffee, who will supply Sodexo with machines as well as fair-trade certified coffees; the other one with Numi, from which Sodexo has selected 100% organic teas.[citation needed]
In 2011, Sodexo entered an 8-year contract with the American government, by which the company commits itself to provide food services to 31 United States Marines Corps mess halls.[citation needed]”
