James Talarico is a progressive Democrat and Texas state representative...

Editor's note: ...who is the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in 2026. A Presbyterian seminarian and aspiring minister, Talarico frequently centers his progressive politics on his Christian faith, emphasizing "politics of love," the Golden Rule, and loving one's neighbor as core motivations for his advocacy. All well and good - superficially. However, Texans need to look deeply into Talarico's progressive Democratic Christianity. Talarico's fusion of Christian rhetoric with politics aimed at remaking social and economic structures toward greater equity and transformation resembles a modern gnostic impulse: "an individualist and voluntarist drive to overcome the given order of nature and society in pursuit of an idealized future." An idealized future that will never come about. What is being brought into question is the possibility of Talarico's coming in close proximity to classical Gnosticism's dualistic rejection of the material world. Talarico's repeated emphasis on "love of neighbor, public education, and this-worldly reform" therefore sits uneasily with pure gnostic categories and remains a point of genuine philosophical disagreement rather than a settled conclusion. Contrary to where Gnosticism flees the material world as a prison and Christianity judges it by a higher moral law, paganism accepts this world as the only arena that matters: a raw, unending contest of natural law, strength, cunning, and survival in which the strong endure and the weak are forgotten.
