Japan and NATO are preparing a new document to strengthen their cooperation in areas including disinformation and outer space, with China and Russia in mind.
Tokyo hopes to release the document by the time of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's trip to the NATO summit in Lithuania in July, sources said.
In January, Kishida held talks with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg during his visit to Japan.
The two leaders agreed to "elevate current Japan-NATO cooperation to new heights that reflect the challenges of a new era," according to a joint statement issued after their meeting.
The statement also confirmed the importance of deepening cooperation in areas such as outer space, critical and emerging technologies and the fight against disinformation.
"NATO is advanced in countering disinformation, and we want to strengthen collaboration," a senior Foreign Ministry official said.
The planned document between Japan and the trans-Atlantic alliance is an Individually Tailored Partnership Program, or ITPP, which will replace the existing Individual Partnership and Cooperation Program, or IPCP.
While the IPCP lists cyber-defense and maritime security as priority areas of cooperation, the ITPP will add new areas of cooperation such as security.
Since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine, Japan has emphasized cooperation with NATO, saying that the security situations in Europe and the Indo-Pacific region are closely linked.
Kishida attended a NATO summit in Spain in June last year, becoming the first Japanese prime minister to participate in NATO's top-level conference.
NATO is also considering establishing a liaison office in Japan, regarding the Asian nation as a partner.

Precisely, only it is NATO doing the scrambling while trying unsuccessfully to figure out what is going on in Russia. The Russians with the Wagner Group problems just pulled off a major op (black op and psyop) against the west contrary to what Politico attempts to establish with this article.
Moscow 'reaps what it sows': NATO members scramble to assess chaos unfolding in Russia

Remember the terror bombing conducted by NATO of Yugoslavia in 1999?
