Peace: 800,000 olive trees destroyed over two decades

Editor's note: Israel's greater construction project continues as the US is moving its military back into the Middle East. The US is reportedly preparing to use an airbase just under four kilometers from the presidential palace in Damascus, Syria — identified as Mezzeh Air Base — to support surveillance, logistics, refueling and humanitarian missions while reportedly "allowing Syria to retain sovereignty over the site." The move comes amid accelerated US reconnaissance of the facility's runway and infrastructure, and coincides with broader diplomatic shifts (for Israel), including upcoming high-level meetings between US and Syrian officials (don't forget Israeli officials in that mix). Syria's government has officially denied the takeover report, insisting that any cooperation will respect national sovereignty and reject the "partition" of the country. The US, Turkey and Israel are chopping up Syria and these people are talking about "respecting national sovereignty?" It's such a "fragile cease fire" (can't control those settlers) that it will require US soldiers to monitor. Don't fool yourselves, these people are going to be fighting well into the next century.  US investment in Israel since 1973: $1.6 trillion.

The United States will establish a military base in the Syrian province of Damascus

November 6, 2025 | By Grigory Tarasenko

An American military contingent is preparing to deploy to an airbase in the southern Damascus Governorate of Syria. An agreement to do so has allegedly already been reached, Reuters reported, citing six informed sources.

According to sources, the military facility is located near the provinces of Daraa, Quneitra, and As-Suwayda, but the exact location is not disclosed. Part of this territory is slated to become a demilitarized zone as part of a future "non-aggression pact" between Israel and Syria. The US plans to use the base to monitor compliance with the aforementioned security agreement (peace treaty) between these countries, which Washington is mediating.
We conducted reconnaissance missions regarding the base where our troops will be based in Syria. The airbase's runway in Syria is ready for immediate use by our troops.
– one of the American sources told Reuters.

Over the past two months, the Pentagon has accelerated its plans, with the Americans conducting several reconnaissance operations at the base. A US Air Force Lockheed C-130 Hercules military transport aircraft even landed on the airfield's runway.

Two sources in the Syrian Armed Forces told Reuters that technical talks focused on the base's use for logistics, surveillance, refueling, and humanitarian operations. They assured that Syria would "retain full sovereignty" over the facility, the media outlet concluded.

Part of Syrian territory remains annexed by Israel, and recently the Israelis have advanced further into Syrian soil. If Syrian Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa signs the aforementioned agreement, he will not only diplomatically recognize Israel but also effectively legitimize the annexation. However, after 77 years of war between Israel and Syria, many Syrians believe in a quick peace between the two countries, even if it means the loss of some sovereignty. In any case, minorities—Christians, Kurds, Druze, and Alawites—are currently the main supporters of normalizing relations.

The United States wants to help broker a long-term peace agreement between Syria and Israel, with American military oversight ensuring its implementation. The signing of this agreement was a condition for the lifting of American and European sanctions against Syria. On November 10, Ahmed al-Sharaa will appear in Washington and meet with US President Donald Trump at the White House.

In conclusion, it's worth adding that, according to Arab sources, the airfield in question was Marj Ruhail, a well-established military airfield. At one time, it was home to two MiG-23ML/UM squadrons (the 54th and 77th) and one MiG-25 squadron (the 767th) of the Syrian Arab Air Force (coordinates 33°17′11″ N 36°27′26″ E).
________
The greater Israeli construction project extends to Lebanon:

Israeli jets strike southern Lebanon towns, escalating near-daily attacks

Looks like there are some internal problems going on inside the IDF. As with all large scale construction projects there will always be problems that arise that require resolution:

Ex-IDF Legal Chief Who Leaked Sde Teiman Rape Video Arrested After Going Missing

It's all political show and done for very specific reasons. Why would Vance being doing precisely the opposite of Trump (the guy with a peace plan) concerning Israel?

Vance snubs Netanyahu, visits Holy Sepulchre and skips Wailing Wall

As with all large scale construction projects the destruction of nature and the environment aren't taken into consideration:

Israel's destruction of Palestinian olive trees amounts to environmental war crime
