When I was deep in my education activism work around 2016, a former friend who had been a science teacher in Massachusetts, said to me something along the lines of: Alison you just have more RAM (random access memory) than most people.

For whatever reason, the cosmos/creator has seen fit to put me in places and endow me with gifts to see what's unfolding and start putting together the story for others. I'm not "smarter," but I CAN hold loose pieces long enough to begin to make sense of this hyper-object.

About the same time I began to notice major foundations were putting lots of money into the research departments of Ivy League schools to study EXECUTIVE FUNCTION in children - Gates, Zuckerberg, Buffett. They all wanted to "build" children's brains. #BuildBackBetter

The world is made up of an IMMENSE amount of pure information, most of which we don't process in our day-to-day activities. Imagine you pass by the water bill on the desk 3 times - seeing it, but not really - until you "notice" it and realize it's time to send payment.

Picture being in a big-box store trying to find a product among 50 competing brands with similar packaging. The retailers know how to make it confusing. Our brains have to be able to sift through lots of extraneous information use it in a way that helps us live well.

It's already hard enough sifting through massive amounts of information coming at us - more and more once we add in digital information. The future they have planned will spill the Internet out onto the landscape. That is augmented reality. How will our brains navigate the noise?

So yesterday, a lovely person in Australia sent me this article on regulating cognition in augmented reality. The author, Jayfus Doswell, has been working on virtual reality education since his time as a student at Oberlin in 1993. wrenchinthegears.com

Doswell's paper discusses Cognitive Load Theory, positing technologies will manage information flows based on factors such as sleep, nutrition, stress, and time of day. They recognize our brains are NOT prepared for the world they are building around us. wrenchinthegears.com/wp-content
1. Working Memory can only handle, on average, seven (plus or minus 2) disconnected items at once [24]
2. Overload occurs when Working Memory is forced to process a significant amount of information too rapidly.
3. Long Term Memory is virtually unlimited and assists Working Memory.
4. Schemas are memory templates coded into Long Term Memory by Work Memory.
5. Working Memory is overloaded when its ability to build a schema is compromised.
6. If Working Memory haas capacity left over, it can access information from long term memory in powerful ways.
7. Automation (doing something without conscious thought) results from well devolped Schemas do to Working Memory's interaction with Long Term Memory. Well developed schemas come with repeated effort and effective practice. [20]

When I saw this diagram I IMMEDIATELY thought of the short film Alexander Singer, of Star Trek, produced after participating in the National Research Council's conference on melding entertain and defense interests in simulation technologies in 1996. littlesis.org/org/349407

You can watch the film here. The set up is a group of analysts in a situation room wearing head sets that regulate information flows based on their cognitive state and task assignments. Windows get larger and smaller depending on importance.


So how do algorithms decide what data gets fed to whom in the name of "human performance"? This is about access and control towards desired ends. Those setting outcomes are not accountable to the masses. They operate at the behest of defense interests. It's psychological warfare.

Abstract

Schema acquisition processes comprise an essential source of cognitive demands in learning situations. To shed light on related mechanisms and influencing factors, this study applied a continuous multi-measure approach for cognitive load assessment. In a dual-task setting, a sample of 123 student participants learned visually presented symbol combinations with one of two levels of complexity while memorizing auditorily presented number sequences. Learners’ cognitive load during the learning task was addressed by secondary task performance, prosodic speech parameters (pauses, articulation rate), and physiological markers (heart rate, skin conductance response). While results revealed increasing primary and secondary task performance over the trials, decreases in speech and physiological parameters indicated a reduction in the overall level of cognitive load with task progression. In addition, the robustness of the acquired schemata was confirmed by a transfer task that required participants to apply the obtained symbol combinations. Taken together, the observed pattern of evidence supports the idea of a logarithmically decreasing progression of cognitive load with increasing schema acquisition, and further hints on robust and stable transfer performance, even under enhanced transfer demands. Finally, theoretical and practical consequences consider evidence on desirable difficulties in learning as well as the potential of multimodal cognitive load detection in learning applications.

Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience is an interdisciplinary field devoted to understanding how children’s minds change as they grow up, interrelations between that and how the brain is changing, and environmental and biological influences on that. 

Our lab specializes in studying a region of the brain known as prefrontal cortex (PFC) and the cognitive abilities that depend on it called executive functions. 

Executive functions include 'thinking outside the box' and flexibly adjusting to unexpected change (cognitive flexibility & creative problem-solving), reasoning and mentally playing with and relating ideas and facts (working memory), and giving considered responses rather than impulsive ones, resisting temptations, resisting distractions, and staying focused (self-control, discipline, & selective attention).

In short, play is educational, children learn more if there is joy, and learn more by doing, rather than if they just sit and listen. Diamond's techniques are used in the school system of British Columbia (BC), where the social and emotional development of children is considered an important educational goal. In BC, the aim is to develop good citizens who are kind, compassionate and against bullying. This approach has narrowed the academic gap between children from differing socio-economic backgrounds in BC. Montessori had similar results with her methods.

Ultimately, the executive function of the brain is related to the spiritual quality of mindfulness or reflection, valued by all the world’s spiritual traditions. Diamond recommends that the best way for children to learn reflection is to practice it through play. Diamond hopes that educators will come to realise that what nourishes a child’s spirit, also nourishes their mind.

Abstract: Wearable Augmented Reality (AR) combines research in AR, mobile/ubiquitous computing, and human ergonomics in which a video or optical see-through head mounted display (HMD) facilitates multi-modal delivery of contextually relevant and computer generated visual and auditory data over a physical, real-world environment. Wearable AR has the capability of delivering on-demand assistance and training across a variety of domains. A primary challenge presented by such advanced HCI technologies is the development of scientifically-grounded methods for identifying appropriate information presentation, user input, and feedback modalities in order to optimize performance and mitigate cognitive overload. A proposed framework and research methodology are described to support instantiation of physiologically-driven, adaptive AR to assess and contextually adapt to an individual's environmental and cognitive state in real time. Additionally a use case within the medical domain is presented, and future research is discussed.
