TAIPEI -- Two Chinese government-backed chip projects have together hired more than 100 veteran engineers and managers from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the world's leading chipmaker, since last year, multiple sources have told the Nikkei Asian Review.

Ed.'s note: Why the concentration of highly skilled engineers in Taiwan? Engineering is one of the most popular majors among universities in Taiwan. The engineering degrees are over a quarter of the bachelor's degrees in Taiwan. Because high-technology manufacturing is the main industry in Taiwan, there are many career opportunities for engineering majors in the country. China is going to pay these engineers well including perks and regular travel bonuses back to Taiwan. Meanwhile in the US, the best degrees are studies in "human rights", "gender studies", "cannabis production" and predatory esoteric financial investments benefitting very few people.
