Dutch investigators have confirmed that Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 had been flying an offset course from its airway before the Boeing 777 broke up after sustaining multiple high-energy impacts.
The crew had requested to fly 20nm (37km) to the left of airway L980 about 20min before the loss of the aircraft.
Flightglobal had previously reported that surveillance data had indicated evidence of a possible deviation due to weather as the aircraft passed Dnipropetrovsk.
The Dutch Safety Board has also disclosed that, a few minutes before, the crew of MH17 initially declined to climb from 33,000ft to the aircraft’s planned cruising altitude of 35,000ft.
Dnipropetrovsk area control centre had inquired whether MH17 could execute the climb, in order to avoid a traffic conflict with another 777 which was approach from behind at the same altitude.
"[MH17's] crew replied they were unable to comply and requested to maintain [33,000ft]," says the preliminary inquiry into the 17 July crash.
After agreeing the weather deviation from airway L980 the crew of MH17 subsequently asked whether there was room to climb to 34,000ft but was told that this altitude was unavailable.
MH17 was still 3.6nm left of the airway just before 16:20, when Dnipropetrovsk centre instructed the flight to proceed directly to Rostov-on-Don, rather than carry on along L980 towards the TAMAK crossing point into Russian airspace.
The crew of MH17 acknowledged the course change to the Rostov-on-Don waypoint, designated RND, stating: "Romeo-November-Delta, Malaysian one-seven."
This was the last transmission from the aircraft, just 7s before the cessation of the cockpit-voice and flight-data recorders a few seconds after 16:20.
Dnipropetrovsk control tried to inform MH17 to expect a direct clearance to the TIKNA waypoint but its crew did not respond. The controller telephoned Rostov centre, asking whether it had contact with MH17, but was told: “No, it seems that its target started falling apart."
"At the time of the occurrence the aircraft was flying in unrestricted airspace, under control of [air traffic control], following the route and flying the altitude as cleared by ATC,” says the inquiry.
Three other commercial aircraft had been overflying the same airspace – which had been closed below 32,000ft – at the time. The inquiry says the closest of these was 30km away.
While examination of MH17's wreckage is continuing, the investigators found multiple punctures – consistent with high-energy impacts – in the forward sections of the aircraft, notably the cockpit.
“The characteristics of the material deformation around the puncture holes appear to indicate that the objects originated from outside the fuselage," says the inquiry. Analysis indicates that small objects entered from “above the level of the cockpit floor", it adds.
Investigators state that the forward parts of the aircraft, including the cockpit, were found closest to the last position of MH17 captured on its flight-data recorder. This indicates that these sections broke off the 777 first. The central and aft structures were found "significantly" further east, showing that MH17 travelled forwards, descending, before breaking up."

Rapid Trident supports interoperability among Ukraine, the United States, NATO and Partnership for Peace member nations. The exercise helps prepare participants to operate successfully in a joint, multinational, integrated environment with host-nation support from civil and governmental agencies. Rapid Trident is a part of U.S. European Command's Joint Training and Exercise Program, designed to enhance joint combined interoperability with allied and partner nations. The exercise also supports Ukraine’s Annual National Program to achieve interoperability with NATO and commitments made in the annual NATO-Ukraine work plan.
Rapid Trident included a full range of military exercises. In addition to U.S. troops in Germany and Italy, the exercise included units from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Canada, Georgia, Germany, Moldova, Poland, Romania, the United Kingdom and Ukraine. Liberty Voice reported in March:
Twelve nations will send 1,300 troops to Lviv, a northwestern Ukrainian city near the Polish border. The exercise, called Rapid Trident, is the only military exercise the United States will participate in this year, according to U.S. Army spokesperson Col. Steven Warren, since the U.S. cancelled upcoming Atlas Vision bi-lateral U.S.-Russia military exercises in response to Russia’s actions in regard to Crimea. Atlas Vision had been scheduled to begin in the same month in the northeastern Russian city of Chelyabinsk."

Bill Clinton admitted to True non-Believers this week in the Clinton Foundation's commitment to honesty, accountability and transparency that the foundation is the most transparent among foundations such as his, and 55,000 emails that were deliberately and timely disappeared have nothing to do with it.
Scam artists, or grifters, "play" their victims using well-tested formulas backed by words of magical thinking, cynical techniques to enrich themselves at the expense of individuals, or of society, or both.

The check is payable to the Clinton Foundation or to Bill himself, as an honorarium for a meaningless idealistic speech that is essentially a homily at a whorehouse.
Two: When the cameras are turned off, Bill receives ultra-luxurious travel on someone else's dime and attends a lavish party in his honor held by some dictator or shady businessman connected to the new FOB. Talks go on behind closed doors.
Three: Millions of dollars of donations start flowing into the Clinton Foundation from the FOB and associates.
Fourth: Potential roadblocks to the deal in the Senate or the State Department melt away. The business deal goes through. The new Clinton friend gets very, very rich.
Fifth: Hillary forgets to disclose these donations.
Six: The press doesn't notice what just happened…"

The Sheraton Chicago Hotels & Towers will serve as headquarters for President Barack Obama during the NATO/G8 summits in May.
The hotel, which has three presidential suites, each with a separate parlor and conference table for 12, has plenty of experience handling high-profile guests in town for heady events.
The Sheraton served as headquarters to former President Bill Clinton during the 1996 Democratic Convention and during the Trans-Atlantic Business Dialogue in 2002, and it's been the hotel of choice for the former president for events related to his Clinton Global Initiative.
In September, the Sheraton was the site of a high-profile fundraiser for Mr. Obama's re-election bid.
Now that the president has settled on a home base for the mid-May summits, hotels are hoping the rest of the G8 delegations — the delegations hoteliers care about most — will fall in accordingly.
There's been some jockeying as to who would be willing to stay in the same hotel as whom — does anyone want to stay with the Russians?
Dignitaries have made verbal commitments, but they haven't yet signed on the dotted line.

In 1986, the BBC sold the property to the Ladbroke Group, who later purchased the non-US Hilton Hotels, for £26 million and eventually reopened the hotel as the Langham Hilton in 1991 after a £100 million refurbishment. New owners extended the hotel and carried out other refurbishments between 1998 and 2000. Further renovation took place between 2004 and 2009, at an estimated cost of £80 million, bringing the hotel back to the status of its grand past and maintaining the quintessential English feel and level of sophistication of its early days. The Ministry of Justice is still paying security firms G4S and Serco millions of pounds every month for supplying electronic tagging equipment, more than a year after both companies were barred from running the contract.
Both companies faced criminal investigations by the Serious Fraud Office over allegations of overcharging that led to them repaying nearly £180m.
The continuing monthly payments to the two companies were uncovered by an analysis of Ministry of Justice (MoJ) data by the Centre for Crime and Justice Studies which shows that G4S was paid a total of £8.7m between March 2014 – when it lost the tagging contract – and February 2015. Serco was paid £4.5m over the same period.
The electronic monitoring tags are used to enforce curfews on more than 100,000 offenders each year. The outsourcing giant Capita took over the contract on an interim basis in April last year.
In July 2014, Capita and three other companies were named as the winners of a £265m six-year contract to supply the next generation of satellite tracking tags, which would allow dangerous and repeat offenders to be monitored around the clock."
