Police sources have identified the dead car driver as Saad al-Hilli, an Iraqi-born Briton, and are working on the theory that he was holidaying in the picturesque Annecy region with his wife and two daughters and their grandmother. Two girls, whose ages of around 8 and 4 match the account that neighbours in Britain give of Hilli's family, survived and are under police protection in hospital. A local cyclist who was passing the scene was also shot dead. "We received information from the British authorities about a money dispute between two brothers of this family," state prosecutor Eric Maillaud told Reuters on Friday. "It's an interesting line of investigation, but one among many." Investigators were planning to talk on Friday to the 4-year-old, who was being looked after at a psychiatric hospital in the city of Grenoble after spending eight hours hiding under dead bodies in the car, apparently too scared to move, while police sealed the vehicle to await a forensics team. The other girl, aged around 8 and believed to be her sister, was badly beaten and was due to undergo a second operation in Grenoble for severe head injuries. Shocked neighbours of Hilli in rural Surrey, south of London, described the family as friendly and normal. Hilli was an engineer who helped to design the kitchen of the European Airbus aircraft, according to his accountant, Julian Stedman [allegedly helped install Federal Bridge hijack system for Air France Flight 447]. Stedman has also said Hilli worked in a satellite technology firm near the family home…. “CHEVALINE, France (Reuters) - A four-year-old British girl spent eight hours [allegedly tasered in act allegedly witnessed by ex-RAF officer] cowering among the bodies of three adults, thought to be her mother, father and grandmother, who were shot dead in a car in the French Alps. The child, apparently on a family camping holiday from Britain, was found by police unhurt shortly before midnight on Wednesday huddled on the floor behind the front seats of the car, hidden under the legs and skirt of one of the dead women. A second girl of about eight, thought to be her sister, had been found earlier with serious injuries having been shot in the shoulder and severely beaten on the head. A French cyclist was also found shot dead at the scene on a mountain road near the village of Chevaline, close to the Annecy lake and the Swiss border. The man, a young father who lived in the area named Sylvain Mollier, "just happened to be riding by" at the time of the attack, officials said.”

“Mr al Hilli had been working as a freelance engineer for Guildford-based Surrey Satellite Technology after fleeing Saddam's Iraq, neighbours said. He was known to security services and was put under Metropolitan Police Special Branch surveillance during the second Gulf war, the Daily Mail reported. A Scotland Yard spokesman said they could not comment because he had not yet been formally identified. Mr al Hilli had confided to neighbours about something that was troubling him in the run-up to his holiday. He and his family had been staying in a caravan at a campsite popular with UK tourists called Le Solitaire du Lac, in Saint Jorioz, since Monday. It is believed their neighbours at the campsite alerted police when they appeared to be missing. No weapons were found at the scene of the shooting, which happened at around 3.40pm on Wednesday. Fifteen cartridges were found near the vehicle. Only the windows had been shot through, leading police to speculate it may have been the work of a professional hitman.
