Underlining his appreciation of the impact the atrocity had on America, David Cameron spoke for the first time at his joint press conference with President Barack Obama about his own anxious wait for news of his missing wife.
Mrs Cameron, then 30, was pregnant with their first child, Ivan, when she flew into New York the day before the 9/11 terrorist attacks to open the Manhattan branch of Smythson, the upmarket stationery firm she still works as a consultant for.
She was in the store, a few miles away from Ground Zero on 61st Street and Madison Avenue, when the planes flew into the Towers.
With phone connections down across Manhattan, Mr Cameron, who had been elected as an MP a few months earlier, was unable to reach his wife.
Meanwhile, Mrs Cameron was caught up in “chaotic” scenes as, without a television in the shop, she was forced to ask passers-by what was happening downtown.

While enjoying a phenomenal nine course menu designed by Michelin Star Chef Herbert Berger with accompanying wines, guests were entertained by PB as he told the story of “Rhubarb” and recounted some of the more entertaining anecdotes from his own personal journey.
Having begun his career in his native Netherlands, PB moved to New York for a four year stint in the mid-nineties. Working at The Waldorf Astoria [original was built by Sam Cam’s stepfather’s ancestors, William Waldorf Astor, whose Waldorf Hotel was opened in 1893, and his cousin, John Jacob Astor IV, whose Astoria Hotel was opened four years later in 1897] he recounted how on his first day a waiter was killed following an accident with a renegade dinner plate and on his second day he shook hands with President Bill Clinton – “It was never dull, that was for sure!”. He worked his way up from Head Waiter to Director of the Bull & Bear Restaurant and also Oscar’s and is proud to have been inducted into “The Waldorf Astoria Distinguished Alumni Club” for his efforts.”

On September 11th 2001, I was staying at the Marriott World Trade Center – the hotel at the foot of the Twin Towers. I was a diplomat at the British Embassy in Washington DC – posted there by Gordon Brown’s Treasury. I was at the Trade Center for two days, attending a conference on the US economy. My room looked directly onto the South Tower, across the roof of the Marriott.
I woke up that morning, ordered breakfast, and was watching Tracey Ullman on NBC’s Today Show. Fruit, yogurt, coffee. Nice close-up view of the South Tower. Then stuff started landing outside my bedroom window, onto the hotel roof right in front of me – burning debris, flying papers, and a very bad burning smell. I thought it was a bomb.
Tracey was still talking to Katie Couric on the TV. I stuck my head out the bedroom door. No evacuation announcement. Katie announced that a small plane had hit the North Tower. A one-off. Outside on the Marriott roof, it was looking really bad: more burning stuff falling within inches of my window. It was time to go.
I packed my case, and left my room. Went down the stairs, and got to the big lobby – which was packed with people. By this time, it was nearly 9am. I joined the line to exit the building. Just as I was leaving, the second plane hit the South Tower, right above our heads. Lots more stuff starting falling down, and we were pushed back inside. Some injured people were pulled in from the sidewalk, quite bad.
People started calling on the pay phones, because mobiles weren’t working.
Panic started. This wasn’t an accident any more. There could be more planes.
The ground outside had the same stuff on it as the Marriott roof – burning fireballs, random papers, and that smell.
I was on my own, didn’t know anyone and didn’t speak to anyone. Nearer 9.30, they started letting everyone out. Don’t look up, run, and keep going. Got clear of the Towers, with my suitcase, and called my sister in Newark. Clear of the Towers, and walking down to Battery Park, I could see things more clearly. That blue sky, after the rain the night before. The top floors, trapped. The jumpers, quite a lot of them. People taking photos. I watched for a bit, didn’t take any photos, just watched. That’s when I realised how serious it was. Then I carried on walking.
I ended up on Wall Street.
It sounded like another plane was hitting. But it was the South Tower falling, about four blocks away. I turned the corner of Wall Street, and saw that massive cloud coming towards me. I dumped my suitcase, and legged it down Broad Street, past Wall St metro station. The cloud was yards behind me. To my right, a side entrance, with a metal shutter. An NY policeman let me and one other person inside. It was the New York Stock Exchange – strangely appropriate, for a Treasury diplomat. Within five seconds, the NYSE shutter came down. I was lucky to be inside. Outside, people were getting engulfed.
I was taken down to the basement, given a bottle of water and left there for over an hour. Circles of women were praying. For a while, I thought we weren’t going to get out. This was probably the most frightening bit. Then we were allowed up to the trading floor of the Stock Exchange. I stayed there for another couple of hours, watching the Pentagon and the collapsed Towers. Then we were allowed out.
Out on the street, the ground was covered in thick powder. Like grey snow. Hardly anyone was around. I walked away along Wall Street, under the Brooklyn Bridge, through Chinatown and Little Italy up to Midtown. Five or six miles to the British Consulate. They were expecting me. I was taken straight to the Consul-General’s office. Asked him for some cigarettes, and smoked most of his Dunhills. Called my family, who had no idea where I had been for the last six hours.
I watched Rudy Giuliani on TV that night, and George Bush, and Tony Blair. Actually went to sleep, amazingly. Got up the next morning, and left from Penn Station on a packed train. Met my sister in Newark, and spent the next three years in Washington DC.”

It sounded like another plane was hitting. But it was the South Tower falling, about four blocks away. I turned the corner of Wall Street, and saw that massive cloud coming towards me. I dumped my suitcase, and legged it down Broad Street, past Wall St metro station. The cloud was yards behind me. To my right, a side entrance, with a metal shutter. An NY policeman let me and one other person inside. It was the New York Stock Exchange – strangely appropriate, for a Treasury diplomat. Within five seconds, the NYSE shutter came down. I was lucky to be inside. Outside, people were getting engulfed.
I was taken down to the basement, given a bottle of water and left there for over an hour. Circles of women were praying. For a while, I thought we weren’t going to get out. This was probably the most frightening bit. Then we were allowed up to the trading floor of the Stock Exchange. I stayed there for another couple of hours, watching the Pentagon and the collapsed Towers. Then we were allowed out.
Out on the street, the ground was covered in thick powder. Like grey snow. Hardly anyone was around. I walked away along Wall Street, under the Brooklyn Bridge, through Chinatown and Little Italy up to Midtown. Five or six miles to the British Consulate. They were expecting me. I was taken straight to the Consul-General’s office. Asked him for some cigarettes, and smoked most of his Dunhills. Called my family, who had no idea where I had been for the last six hours.
I watched Rudy Giuliani on TV that night, and George Bush, and Tony Blair. Actually went to sleep, amazingly. Got up the next morning, and left from Penn Station on a packed train. Met my sister in Newark, and spent the next three years in Washington DC.”

WASHINGTON — When William Peter Blatty won a four-year scholarship to Georgetown University in the 1940s, he arrived at the Jesuit campus with a sense of relief.
During his childhood, Blatty and his mother suffered through more than 20 evictions for non-payment of rent. For the first time, he knew he could stay put without unwelcome interruptions.
More than a half century later, after winning an Academy Award for the screenplay adaptation of his bestselling novel The Exorcist, Blatty still calls Georgetown “home.”
But his love for the pontifical institution has inspired him to support and sign a canon-law petition that asks the “Catholic Church to require that Georgetown implement Ex Corde Ecclesiae, a papal constitution governing Catholic colleges.”
If that effort fails, the petition signed by Blatty and 2,000 other Catholics calls for “the removal or suspension of top-ranked Georgetown’s right to call itself Catholic and Jesuit in any of its representations.”
Asked to explain why he has backed a petition that could damage the reputation of his alma mater, Blatty told the Register, “Today’s Georgetown isn’t Georgetown, but more like a living Picture of Dorian Gray.”

If complexity is the problem, then simplicity is the solution and there is no doubt that we are all living in a highly complex world that relatively few understand. By that, I'm not talking about machines and I'm not talking about systems per se. What I am talking about are the ideas that propelled us into this complexity with the layers of systems that resulted from them and the marketing concepts layered on top of that which presented a Pollyanna's view of a fully automated world of Digital Opportunities for All. The fact that policy makers were blinded by the $Green$ is undeniable. They bought Pollyanna's vision and never looked at the flip side - the dark side. They never logic checked the projections and I can say that with a high degree of certainty because when one does do a logic check, the dreams turn into nightmares rather quickly. In the business, it's what we call a no-brainer. It doesn't take much grey matter to figure it out. For example -
If you were to ask Pollyanna, what does this baby need? Pollyanna says: A computer! A cell phone! Fiber Optic Cable! Technical Education! A human being not blinded by money says, that baby needs food, shelter and love. That's what I mean by no-brainer.

The Difference between Debt-Free Money and Interest-Free Credit

The endless barrage of debt, debt, debt, makes debt-free money sound very attractive. But the problem is not debt: it’s interest. Interest-free, credit-based money is superior to debt-free currency. On the other hand, debt-free money could easily be repaired to again be a competitive proposition.
Debt-free money is simply unbacked ‘paper’ (nowadays it’d be mostly electronic, of course) money, printed (usually) by the State. The State can then either spend it into circulation itself, or have the populace do it; the former method is commonly referred to as Greenbackism, the latter is known as Social Credit.
Interest-free credit is credit by bookkeeping. It’s not unlike our current fractional reserve banking system, although Mutual Credit is a simpler and superior way of creating credit, as there is no need for deposits (‘capitalization’). Hence, Mutual Credit is intrinsically stable, while fractional reserve banking based lending facilities go bust routinely.
