Obama Nominates Lesbian Attorney for Second EEOC Term

President Obama has nominated Chai Feldblum, a lesbian attorney and expert on laws affecting LGBT people, the disabled, and health care policy, for a second term on the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Human Rights Campaign reports on its blog.
Feldblum’s first term ends July 1. She has been an EEOC member since 2010 and is the first out LGBT person to serve on the commission. A highlight of her first term was last year’s unanimous ruling that discrimination against transgender people amounts to sex discrimination and is therefore banned by federal law.
Feldblum’s initial nomination to the commission was highly controversial, with many conservative activists objecting to her outspoken support for LGBT causes. The Senate failed to confirm her appointment after a hearing in late 2009, so the president used his recess appointment power to put her on the EEOC in March 2010. In December of that year the Senate finally voted to confirm her.
She has taught at Georgetown University Law Center and worked as an attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union. She helped draft the Americans With Disabilities Act, a federal law passed in 1990 to protect the rights of disabled people, and the still-pending Employment Non-Discrimination Act.”

EEOC NEW YORK OFFICE DESTROYED IN TERRORIST ATTACK ON WORLD TRADE CENTER
WASHINGTON - Among the tragic events of yesterday was the destruction of the New York District Office of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), located on the 18th floor of the World Trade Center, Building 7. Gratefully, all district office personnel, along with other residents of the building, were safely evacuated before the structure collapsed late yesterday afternoon.
EEOC Chair Cari M. Dominguez and agency Commissioners and officials have been in frequent contact with New York office director Spencer Lewis, who reports that all agency staff are accounted for and physically safe. He further reports that the "emotional toll is unimaginable," as many of the EEOC workers witnessed the unfolding drama.
Commission Chair Dominguez had this to say: "On Monday, I was in New York City, in Building 7 of the World Trade Center, visiting the staff and announcing the filing of a major lawsuit against Morgan Stanley. Today, that building no longer exists. The announcement that took me to New York simply pales compared to the enormity of human losses that Morgan Stanley and other firms are facing. Our hearts and our thoughts go out to them. Our sympathies and our prayers are with them and their loved ones."
She added, "The EEOC family is donating blood and doing everything we can to help our fellow federal employees at the Pentagon."
A number of steps are being taken to address the impact of this tragedy on staff of the New York office as well as all EEOC personnel, said Chair Dominguez:
A task force has been established to coordinate and provide services from EEOC's Washington headquarters to New York.
EEOC and the General Services Administration are working closely together to find alternative work sites for the agency's New York employees so that EEOC can continue to provide services in that area.
EEOC is working closely with the Office of Personnel Management to establish counseling services for employees in need throughout the country, and additional information about accessing these services will be provided shortly.
Agency officials indicate that the goal of the EEOC is to get the New York employees back in a workplace and fully operational as soon as possible.
EEOC is the federal agency which enforces laws prohibiting workplace discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex [unless it is heterosexual encounters between Caucasian adults], national origin, age, or disability. BRISBANE, Australia -- The terror strikes on New York and Washington caught Australian Prime Minister John Howard and former U.S. President Bill Clinton away from their homes.
Clinton was taking a break in the Australian resort of Port Douglas, where he was placed under guard, while Howard was in the United States.
Clinton had been taking a break in the northern state of Queensland after recent speaking engagements in Sydney and Melbourne.
He arrived in the resort town Tuesday morning and spent the day snorkeling and speaking with locals.

But he was kept out of sight Wednesday as police threw a security cordon around him.
Clinton had been scheduled to travel to Taiwan on Wednesday but postponed his trip.
"He'll obviously want to return to the U.S. as soon as possible," Queensland Premier Peter Beattie said.
Howard was able to offer on-the-spot support to Australia's large ally and was feted on Washington's Capitol Hill on Wednesday.
Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, meanwhile, was stranded in Austria as many airlines canceled flights to the United States and U.S. airports remained closed Wednesday morning.
Gore was in Vienna, where he had been scheduled to speak to the Internet Service Providers Austria on the future of the Internet. In a written statement to the Austria Press Agency, Gore condemned the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington as "an unspeakably evil act."
