Actress, activist, and occasional oddity Angelina Jolie is the daughter of 1970s movie star Jon Voight. Her first movie was her father's Lookin' to Get Out with Burt Young in 1982, but curious Jolie fans are advised: She was only six years old, and while she was the best thing in that otherwise droll film, she appeared only in the movie's last few minutes.

Her parents divorced when she was an infant, and Jolie was raised by her mother not quite in poverty, but embarrassingly poor compared to her classmates at Beverly Hills High School. She appeared in music videos by Meat Loaf and Lenny Kravitz, and at 17 she played a half-human in the abysmal Cyborg 2 with Elias Koteas. Her first semi-hit was Hackers with Matthew Lillard, and her first good reviews came for the 1998 HBO film Gia, a biography of doomed supermodel Gia Carangi.

She had a widely-publicized affair with lesbian supermodel Jenny Shimizu, her co-star in the action film Foxfire. Shimizu says their time together included at least one visit to an S & M dungeon. The two women have remained friends, and have been intimate numerous times between Jolie's relationships with men. Openly bisexual, Jolie has said she prefers to play women she would be willing to date.

Her breakthrough role was Girl, Interrupted with Winona Ryder, where Jolie played a chronically depressed mental patient not far removed from herself, and won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. She attended the awards ceremony with her brother, actor James Haven, and sparked worldwide gasps when she said in her acceptance speech, "I am so in love with my brother," and then proceeded to kiss him full on the lips.

She married Jonny Lee Miller, her co-star from Hackers, in a ceremony where she wore black rubber pants and a shirt with his name scrawled across it in her blood. Divorced from Miller after just three years of marriage, she then married Billy Bob Thornton, her co-star from Pushing Tin. He was twenty years older than Jolie and publicly announced that he wore her underwear. They told reporters that when work kept them apart, they each wore a vial of the other's blood around their necks. But her second marriage, like her first, ended in divorce after three years.

Jolie's career sputtered as she starred in two generally successful films based on the Lara Croft: Tomb Raider video games, but also made lackluster duds like Original Sin with Antonio Banderas (memorable mostly for Jolie's enthusiastic work without clothes) and the poorly-received Life or Something Like It with Edward Burns. In Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow she played the pirate-like pilot, and in Alexander she played Colin Farrell's mother, though she is only one year older than him. She voiced a fish in Shark Tale, then had her biggest commercial success with Mr and Mrs Smith in 2005, co-starring Brad Pitt. The movie was filmed and released amid rumors that Pitt, who was still married to Jennifer Aniston, was having an affair with Jolie. They denied everything, but Pitt and Aniston were soon divorced, and Jolie and Pitt have been gossip fodder ever since.

Jolie has volunteered as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commission for Refugees since 2001, and seems to take her UN work very seriously. She has made trips to Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Pakistan, Thailand, and Chechnya, and donated $5 million to a wildlife sanctuary in Cambodia. She adopted a Cambodian orphan in 2002, and an Ethiopian orphan in 2005. In early 2006 Pitt adopted both children, changing their last names to Jolie-Pitt. Several months later, Jolie and Pitt had a daughter in a more traditional manner.

Jolie's mother was model and occasional actress Marcheline Bertrand, who was part-Iroquois. Jolie and her mother produced the 2005 documentary Trudell, about the Native American poet and activist John Trudell. Jolie's godparents are actress Jacqueline Bisset and actor Maximilian Schell. Voight played her father in the firstLara Croft movie, but father and daughter were estranged for several years during and after Jolie's stormy marriage to Thornton, describing Jolie as "mentally deranged" and suggesting on TV that she seek professional help.

Jolie has been tattooed more than a dozen times, although several of these were later laser-erased. She says she treats her body as a diary, using tattoos to mark particularly good times. Among the tattoos she has spoken of publicly, she has a Tennessee Williams quote on her left forearm, a prayer of protection etched in Buddhist Sanskrit on her right shoulder, a black cross, two Native American symbols, and "What nourishes me also destroys me" is engraved in Latin on her stomach. Her "Billy Bob" tattoo was removed after her divorce from Thornton.

Erotic asphyxiation or breath control play is the intentional restriction of oxygen to the brain for sexual arousal. The sexual practice is variously called asphyxiophilia, autoerotic asphyxia,hypoxyphilia. Colloquially, a person engaging in the activity is sometimes called a gasper. The erotic interest in asphyxiation is classified as a paraphilia in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manualof the American Psychiatric Association.  .. Peter Anthony Motteux, English author, playwright, translator, publisher and editor of The Gentleman's Journal, "the first English magazine," from 1692 to 1694, died from apparent autoerotic asphyxiation in 1718, which is probably the first recorded case.

Frantisek Kotzwara, composer, died from erotic asphyxiation in 1791.

Sada Abe killed her lover, Kichizo Ishida, through erotic asphyxiation in 1936, proceeding to cut off his penis and testicles and carry them around with her in her handbag for a number of days. The case caused a sensation in 1930s Japan and has remained one of the most famous Japanese murder cases of all time.

David Carradine died on June 4, 2009 from accidental asphyxiation, according to the medical examiner who performed a private autopsy on the actor.[33][34] His body was found hanging by a rope in a closet in his room in Thailand,[35][36] and there was evidence of a recent orgasm;[37] two autopsies were conducted and concluded that his death was not suicide, and the Thai forensic pathologist who examined the body stated that his death may have been due to autoerotic asphyxiation.[38][39][40][41][42][43] Two of Carradine's ex-wives, Gail Jensen[44][45] and Marina Anderson,[46][47][48] stated publicly that his sexual interests included the practice of self-bondage.”

Who Killed British Spy Gareth Williams?

     Gareth Williams grew up in North Wales, graduated from Cambridge University, and earned a Ph.D. from Manchester University. A true math genius, he was hired as a codebreaker at the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) in Chetenham, England. A fit, slender man of five-foot seven inches who participated in competitive cycling, Williams kept to himself, and lived a somewhat secret life. The quiet 31-year-old bachelor had become a rising star in the super secret world of counterterrorism.

     In 2010, after ten years at the GCHQ electronic surveillance facility at Chetenham, Williams was transferred to the secret British intelligence gathering agency M16 in London. He lived on the top floor of a 5-story townhouse in the upscale Pimlico neighborhood of west London. The government-issued flat was less than a mile from M16 headquarters.

     In August 2010, Williams, who didn't make a habit of missing work, hadn't been seen at M16 headquarters for more than a week. He was not on vacation or special assignment, and didn't answer his phone. His M16 supervisor did not report him missing, but residents of his townhouse, after not seeing him around, called the police.

     On Monday afternoon, on August 23, 2010, police officers broke into Williams' apartment. In the bathroom, they saw, sitting in the empty tub, a large cylindrical North Face sports satchel (called a duffel bag or holdall). The bag had been secured by a small padlock. After breaking the lock and unzipping the satchel, the police found the decomposing body of a nude man in a fetal position with his arms crossed over his chest. The man in the bag was Gareth Williams.

     Officers with Scotland Yard's Homicide and Serious Crime Command conducted a crime scene investigation. There was no evidence of forcible intrusion into the apartment. (The front door had been locked from the outside which suggests that someone had been in the flat with Williams when he went into the satchel.) The apartment showed no signs of a struggle or theft. Moreover, the crime scene investigators found no latent fingerprints or trace evidence that may have contained DNA. It seemed the death site had been forensically sanitized.

     The day after the gruesome and perplexing discovery, Home Office forensic pathologist Dr. Ben Swift performed the autopsy. Because of the decomposition, Dr. Swift could not pinpoint the time of death. The condition of the corpse also precluded any kind of toxicological analysis to determine if Williams had been poisoned. The forensic pathologist found no evidence of physical trauma on the body, including Williams' fingers and nails. From this Dr. Swift concluded that Mr. Williams had not tried to escape the confines of the sports bag.

     While the manner of Gareth Williams' death--homicide, suicide, natural or accidental--could not be forensically determined, Dr. Swift reported that the likely cause of death was oxygen depletion, or hypercapnia--a build up of carbon dioxide inside the bag. The forensic pathologist speculated that Williams would have suffocated within 30 minutes.

     A series of experiments conducted by two men of Williams' size and fitness, revealed that it was virtually impossible to put oneself in that bag. It would also have been extremely difficult for one person to put a dead body in the satchel. This led some investigators to conclude that Williams, with the help of someone else, had willingly climbed into the bag.

     In Williams' apartment, detectives found $35,000 worth of designer women's dresses, plus 26 pairs of expensive women's shoes. In addition to a bright orange female wig, investigators found cocaine, and a cache of gay pornography. Williams' had also visited several web sites for practitioners of bondage, S & M, and a phenomena called "claustophilia," the experiencing of sexual pleasure by being confined in small enclosures.

     When officials at M16 were informed of Mr. Williams' apparent sexual preferences--his cross-dressing, bondage, and gayness--his supervisors said they had been aware of all of that. In the world of modern espionage, the private sexual lives of their counterterrorism officers was no long of interested to agency administrators. Shortly after the discovery of Williams' body, M16 had released a statement that his death had nothing to do with his work.

     The investigation of Gareth Williams' bizarre death continues to this day. There are those who believe he was poisoned to death--perhaps by potassium cyanide, or the sedative GHB--by either Russian secret service hit men, Al Qaeda operatives, or assassins from other unfriendly countries.

     Another school of thought involves the theory that Williams was murdered by a gay lover. Perhaps the most popular belief is that Williams died as a result of some kind of sadistic or masochistic sexual act gone wrong, something in the line of auto-erotic asphyxiation. If the later is the case, the manner of his death would be accidental. But questions remain. Who helped Williams into the satchel, then locked it from the outside? Who had a key to his flat? And why hasn't this person come forward?

     The Gareth Williams case has received almost no media coverage in the U.S., but in the United Kingdom, it's still a big story. And a big mystery.
