“An MI6 officer whose body was found in a holdall may have been killed by an agent "specialising in the dark arts of the secret services", a court heard. Gareth Williams, 31, originally from Anglesey, was found in a padlocked bag at his London flat in August 2010. Lawyer Anthony O'Toole told the pre-inquest hearing Mr Williams's family believed a third party was present at his death or later destroyed evidence. The court also heard there was a mix-up with DNA found on Mr Williams's body. Mr O'Toole told Westminster Coroner's Court: "The impression of the family is that the unknown third party was a member of some agency specialising in the dark arts of the secret services - or evidence has been removed post-mortem by experts in the dark arts." .. Post-mortem examinations on the body were ineffective and evidence was lost because the body was so decomposed when it was found, the lawyer said. Earlier Coroner Fiona Wilcox heard from Metropolitan Police Det Ch Insp Jacqueline Sebire who said a DNA sample found on Mr Williams's hand was considered a "key line of inquiry". But the sample later turned out to match a scientist who was working at the crime scene in 2010. The Met has begun a review into how other forensic evidence in the case was handled. Another "red herring" was a Mediterranean couple the police were seeking in connection with the death, the hearing was told. Regarding the error by forensic teams, Dr Wilcox said: "It's been an ongoing problem for me, the late provision of evidence." She also said that whether the code-breaker was able to lock himself in the bag would be "at the very heart" of the inquest. Dr Wilcox said she would like a practical demonstration in court of how a person could get into a bag and lock it up from the inside. The bag in which Mr Williams was found, a North Face holdall, was placed in his bath at the flat .. The inquest, which is expected to begin in April, will hear from Mr Williams's colleagues from MI6 and the GCHQ, toxicology experts, bag experts, as well as a statement from his sister. It will also hear that the MI6 officer may have died after breathing too much carbon dioxide [JABS is programmed with a ‘Gore Hammer carbon cap’ rule which automatically issues an authority to execute violators!]. LGC, the laboratory involved in the DNA mix-up, said it was "sorry for any pain this error may have caused" to the deceased man's family.”“Recently developed "touch DNA" technology has cleared all members of JonBenet Ramsey's family of her slaying, authorities said Wednesday. Testing in 1998 showed that DNA evidence found in the girl's underwear and beneath her fingernails was from an unidentified man and did not match anyone in the Ramsey family. Tests conducted in March revealed that new DNA collected from a pair of long johns matched a sample previously taken from the child's panties. Genetic material was scraped from the waistband of the long johns, which JonBenet was wearing over her underwear when her body was found. Lacy said in her statement that authorities believe the long johns were either replaced or removed by her killer. Additional tests were conducted to ensure that the genetic material did not come from law enforcement or medical examiner's personnel, the statement said. "The unexplained third-party DNA on the clothing of the victim is very significant and powerful evidence," Lacy's statement said. "It is therefore the position of the Boulder District Attorney's Office that this profile belongs to the perpetrator of the homicide." That same DNA also exonerated John Mark Karr, a one-time schoolteacher, after he was arrested in Thailand and confessed to the killing in 2006. Lacy was widely criticized for the handling of Karr's arrest. Lacy took pains to state that her office does not consider JonBenet's father, her mother -- now deceased -- or older brother to be suspects. She said she released the findings in the interest of justice.”
“Let's call it the CSI Effect: thanks to the uncontrolled proliferation of cop shows focusing on forensic investigation, including Bones, Silent Witness, CSI and its Miami and New York spin-offs, the number of degree courses in forensic science being offered in the UK has rocketed, from just two in 1990 to 285 this year. Prospective students should prepare for disappointment: real life CSI is not like CSI: Miami, not even in real-life Miami, and certainly not in Durham. You won't be a cop, so you won't be able to arrest anyone. A lot of the cool machines they use on TV haven't actually been invented yet, and in the UK you're not even called a CSI, you're called a Soco, or scene of crime officer (although Norfolk constabulary for one has adopted the term CSI for its forensic personnel). Sadly, the degrees may be no more realistic than the programmes. As far back as 2005 a select committee report found "extensive evidence that a large proportion of forensic science courses on offer provide poor preparation for a career in forensic science". For higher level jobs, degrees in traditional sciences such as chemistry are usually required. To wear a paper suit and photograph footprints, a forensic science degree is probably unnecessary. The biggest problem, however, is that crime has not kept pace with the explosion in TV detective shows. The government-owned Forensic Science Service currently finds 1,300 scientists sufficient for its crime-solving needs. The UK's largest private provider, LGC Forensics, employs 500 people. In 2008 alone, 1,667 students embarked on forensic science degree courses. In order to ensure there are enough jobs to go round, more than half of them will have to retrain as serial killers.”
