United Airlines grounds 757 jets for computer check

United Airlines grounded its entire fleet of Boeing 757-model jets today to check onboard computers and will continue checks for much of the day Wednesday after learning that the computers installed in 2004 had not been checked for compliance.
United Airlines Boeing 757-200Flights to and from Denver International Airport could be affected but a company spokesman could not say how many.
"Everyone should check online to see if their flight has been delayed before they head to the airport," said United spokesman Charlie Hobart.
United is moving other aircraft into positions and is booking passengers onto other flights, he said.
Computers aboard the 96 aircraft handle data related to air pressure and temperature/ The units have functioned normally without any reported problems, according to the company.
The checks to each plane should take about 60 to 90 minutes.
This maintenance result from a 2004 directive, when United upgraded computers but never did the proper checks to ensure they were in compliance, according to NBC News, which first reported the system-wide maintenance.
The network characterized the problem as more of a paperwork issue than a safety issue.
I've just read that the onboard computers of cars can be manipulated to do things like shutting off the brakes. What you are saying here is making a lot more sense now.

it is coincidental that the number of Boeing jets modified was 96; United Airlines grounded aircraft to verify and check computers, so it is reported, but what other components/systems were checked? Boeing was also victimized on 9/11
