'US Drones Killed 938 in Pakistan in 2010′

The year 2010, US drone attacks killed Pakistani civilians on an average of three per day in the tribal areas bordering Afghanistan (video). The CIA carried out an unprecedented 132 drone attacks killing 938 people alone during the past year. Details of the deaths emerged in an annual report compiled by The Conflict Monitoring Center, an Islamabad based NGO. The report gives detailed accounts on how the CIA killed innocent people merely on the suspicion of being militants.

The Conflict Monitoring Center points out that none of the media organizations throughout last year reported body counts from independent sources.

The media reports were based on claims of anonymous U.S. and Pakistani intelligence officials. According to these findings, casualties could be much higher as security officials have a tendency to whitewash the evidence of civilian deaths for fear of public backlash

Over half of the 132 drone attacks were carried out in the last four months of the past year to what many believe an attempt by the US to showcase some semblance of success against militants in the tribal region to propagate justification for a gradual draw-down of NATO troops from Afghanistan.

However, many analysts believe the geo-strategic game plans of the US have turned out to be counter productive.

The year 2010 proved to be one of the deadliest years as the number of drone strikes exceeded the combined number of such attacks carried out from 2004 to 2009. The report states that 2052 people lost their lives in drone strikes during the 5-year period. The growing causalities of civilians has left behind many tragic stories in the tribal areas.

As the number of civilian deaths continues to mount, public reaction in Pakistan against the frequent use of drone strikes has finally gathered momentum.

Raymond Davis 'was acting head of CIA in Pakistan'

A US intelligence agent arrested after shooting dead two men was the acting head of the CIA in Pakistan and had been gathering intelligence for drone attacks, according to intelligence sources.

Raymond Davis, a 36-year-old former special forces soldier, had taken command after the CIA station chief's cover was blown, according to reports.

American officials insist he is entitled to diplomatic immunity and that he be released immediately.

Davis has been held for almost a month in a Lahore prison while a court decides his status.

The case has provoked a surge in anti-American hostility and spawned a wave of conspiracy theories.

Many Pakistanis have questioned whether Davis was really the victim of an attempted robbery – as he told police – and exactly why he was driving around Lahore with a Glock handgun in a rented car.

This week it emerged that he was employed by the CIA and that he was engaged in an undercover operation.

On Tuesday The Nation newspaper, which has close links to Pakistan's military establishment, claimed one of his main tasks was to keep the CIA network intact in the tribal agencies, where al-Qaeda-linked militants maintain bases, and that he was familiar with their local languages.

Pakistan authorities say they recovered items including a make-up kit, long-range radio, a GPRS system and a camera containing photographs of sensitive locations.

Telephone records suggest he was in contact with Lashkar-e-Jhangvi and the Pakistan Taliban in South Waziristan.

Even Pakistan's spies say they had no idea what Davis was doing in Lahore.

Raymond Davis Updates: More US Lies, Related Death Toll Mounting, Blackwater, Taliban Recruiting … and What is Hyperion Security Services?

BBC
22nd February 2011

Was he acting in self-defence?

Matters were further inflamed by the suicide of the widow of one of the men killed by Mr Davis

That was the initial plea made by Mr Davis and the US embassy. However, subsequent investigations by the police, forensic labs and the local and international media suggest that the two men were driving away from Mr Davis when they were shot. In February Lahore’s police chief said that Mr Davis was guilty of “cold-blooded murder” – he said that no fingerprints had been uncovered on the triggers of the pistols found on the bodies of the two men. Furthermore he said that tests had shown that the bullets remained in the magazines of their guns, not the chambers, suggesting they weren’t about to shoot him. On the face of it, this leaves Mr Davis’s claim that they were robbers – with one even apparently cocking a gun at his head – looking very thin. In addition, police say ballistics evidence shows that the pair were shot in the back – which again suggests they were moving away from Mr Davis, rather than about to attack him.

What about the second car and its victim?

A side event to the main drama concerning Mr Davis was the fact a third man was also killed during the incident. He was an innocent bystander run over by a US embassy vehicle, which was initially said to have arrived to rescue Mr Davis. The fact that an embassy vehicle was able to get to the spot so quickly was a source of astonishment to anyone who is even vaguely aware of the geography of Lahore. Given the incident was over within minutes, it seems incredible that anyone could negotiate the 12km (7.4-mile) 40-minute drive in peak traffic in less than five minutes. But subsequent investigations have now shown that the second car – a Toyota Landcruiser – was with Mr Davis at the time of the incident. In fact, according to eyewitnesses, Mr Davis was leading and clearing the way for the Toyota when the incident took place.

In the light of what happened afterwards, it seems Mr Davis was in “protective mode” and opened fire to “secure” whoever or whatever was in the Toyota – the interior of this vehicle was not visible as its windows were tinted. It is evident in local TV footage that the second vehicle is going away from Mr Davis at the time of the incident. As it disappears into the dust, Mr Davis calmly pulls over and gives himself up. Pakistani authorities have asked for the Landcruiser and its driver to be handed over – a request with which the US has yet to comply.

A highly-placed political source in the federal government, privy to all developments, said on Tuesday that that no one knows the identity of the driver and the passengers. However, another official, believed to be equally knowledgeable, said that Raymond Davis revealed the names of the so-called rescuers during the initial interrogations.

Raymond Davis Case: Victim’s Family Attacked
24th February 2011
The Express Tribune

LAHORE: Unidentified people attempted to kill the uncle of Shumaila, the widow who poisoned herself after her husband Faheem was gunned down by US citizen Raymond Davis on Thursday . Shumaila’s uncle Sarwar has been admitted to hospital in critical condition.

According to eye witnesses, three unidentified men jumped over the walls of Sarwar’s house and hit him on the head repeatedly with stones. They also forcefully made him eat pesticide pills.

Neighbours intervened after hearing the noise, but the assailants fled after assaulting the neighbours. Allied Hospital MS Dr Rana Bashir has confirmed that Sarwar’s stomach had been washed and he is now out of danger.

Sarwar’s brother told Express News that some people had threatened Sarwar to withdraw from the Raymond Davis case or they would kill him. He appealed to the Punjab chief minister to provide the family justice. RPO Aftab Cheema said action would be taken against the culprits after investigation.

Pressure on both sides

According to an earlier report in The Express Tribune, the families of the two people allegedly murdered by Raymond Davis are coming under pressure from politicians and religious groups not to strike any deals that would allow for Davis’ release.

Waseem Shamshad, elder brother of Faheem, one of the young men killed, told The Express Tribune that the families are coming under conflicting pressures. He claimed that on one hand the government is pressuring the victims’ families to withdraw the case against Davis, while several religious and political groups were pressuring them not to accept any deal that would allow Davis to walk free.

"CIA spy" Davis was giving nuclear bomb material to Al-Qaeda, says report

By ANI | ANI – Sun, Feb 20, 2011 12:18 PM IST

London, Feb 20(ANI): Double murder-accused US official Raymond Davis has been found in possession of top-secret CIA documents, which point to him or the feared American Task Force 373 (TF373) operating in the region, providing Al-Qaeda terrorists with "nuclear fissile material" and "biological agents," according to a report.

Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) is warning that the situation on the sub-continent has turned "grave" as it appears that open warfare is about to break out between Pakistan and the United States, The European Union Times reports.

The SVR warned in its report that the apprehension of 36-year-old Davis, who shot dead two Pakistani men in Lahore last month, had fueled this crisis.

According to the report, the combat skills exhibited by Davis, along with documentation taken from him after his arrest, prove that he is a member of US' TF373 black operations unit currently operating in the Afghan War Theatre and Pakistan's tribal areas, the paper said.

While the US insists that Davis is one of their diplomats, and the two men he killed were robbers, Pakistan says that the duo were ISI agents sent to follow him after it was discovered that he had been making contact with al Qaeda, after his cell phone was tracked to the Waziristan tribal area bordering Afghanistan, the paper said.

The most ominous point in this SVR report is "Pakistan's ISI stating that top-secret CIA documents found in Davis's possession point to his, and/or TF373, providing to al Qaeda terrorists "nuclear fissile material" and "biological agents", which they claim are to be used against the United States itself in order to ignite an all-out war in order to re-establish the West's hegemony over a Global economy that is warned is just months away from collapse," the paper added.
