Polish President Lech Kaczynski dies in plane crash

Source: BBC News

Polish and Russian officials said no-one had survived after the plane apparently hit trees as it approached Smolensk's airport in thick fog. Poland's army chief, central bank governor, MPs and leading historians were among more than 80 passengers.

They were flying in from Warsaw to mark 70 years since the Katyn massacre of thousands of Poles by Soviet forces.

The BBC's Adam Easton, in Warsaw, says the crash is a catastrophe for the Polish people.

He says Prime Minister Donald Tusk was reportedly in tears when he was told.
Mr Tusk, who runs the day-to-day business of government, has called an emergency meeting of ministers.
"I would like to emphasise that I support very close collaboration between our countries. I am convinced that such collaboration is in our common interest and also in the interest of the whole region.”-- Lech Kaczyński.

  1. "In the Soviet Union/Russia they use a unique instrumental landing system called PRMG. It works almost exactly the same way as the international Western system ILS. However, the two are not compatible. The Polish airplane was modified to use the ILS, as the [Soviet] airplane was mainly flying to various airports that use it," Fisher told RT.

  2. "The crash devastated the upper echelons of Poland's political and military establishments. On board were the army chief of staff, the navy chief commander, and heads of the air and land forces. Also killed were the national bank president, deputy foreign minister, army chaplain, head of the National Security Office, deputy parliament speaker, Olympic Committee head, civil rights commissioner and at least two presidential aides and three lawmakers, the Polish foreign ministry said."

    Further:

"U.S. Patriot missiles are expected to be deployed in Poland this year."

Can everyone say, "goodbye to US Patriot missiles?"

    And...

Poland's top banker just got taken out and considering serious issues with the EU banking infrastructure, what an opportune target.

  3. Hi All, I find it highly unlikely that this was pilot error. It was just in Russia for a "overhaul". I wonder if it had any ku band equipment.

  6. What was captured on a now censored YouTube video could have been caused by gunshots or an exploding oxygen canister.

In the background of the video you can hear "Come over here! Get out of here, b.." and then a gunshot. I can only assume that some local security or militia is on the way (firefighters certainly are, judging by the siren) and they might be shooting in the air or otherwise chasing gawkers away. The guy with the camera also scrams before firemen and security arrive.

Those sounds aren't necesarily from "gunshots" or even ammunition going off -- though they could be. There are many other things that can and do explode in the immediate aftermath of an accident, including oxygen canisters and/or other small pressurised containers.

Good point: ok: Likely tie-in is a gun firing into a canister to make sure it doesn't go off when being handled. Somewhere I have a picture of one of these canisters with a convenient hole in it. They stick out among all the debris because they typically keep their shape

  7. Is it possible that Polish president was assasinated? If so then, by whom?

    RADO Today, 12:57
There is an intensive debate going among the Russian professional pilots about the crash. A very interesting analysis was posted here:
    http://picasaweb.google.ru/Amlmtr/MWzNeJ#5459881356386012002

Sorry, the text is in Russian, but the picture is very interesting; the red line marked as "ideal landing path", and yellow is the actual path. Thick yellow line is the path change after the plane hit the tree.

"Investigators are to release the dramatic, and tragic, recordings of the last moments of the TU-154 flight which crashed in Smolensk, western Russia on Saturday killing Lech Kaczynski and 95 others. "

    This according to thenews.pl.

I read this as the complete recordings of the last moments will be published. I'm sorry, I can't read anything else in it.

  8. Georgian TV foretold murder of Polish President
    By: Kavkazcenter.com
    Date: April 11, 2010

The killing of the Polish President Lech Kaczynski in a plane crash organized by the KGB (FSB), was reported on March 13, 2010 by the Georgian TV channel Imedi.

A half-an-hour-long film about an alleged Russian aggression against Georgia foretold the killing of Lech Kaczynski in an explosion of his presidential plane.

The statement by the head of the international affairs committee of the Russian parliament, Kosachev, who talked about a plane crash near Smolensk, seems rather strange in this context.

In an interview with the Russian news agency Interfax, he said he was "in a state of shock and horror" over the news. "The soul trembles to think that Katyn has taken new victims", Kosachev said.

  9. What is the conspiracy with the Polish Plane Crash? How about these facts...
    2010-04-16 (The Vatic Project)

How come President Kaczynski and half of Poland’s government flew to Katyn three days after the official anniversary?

Here is a video making its rounds on youtube which was taken just minutes after the plane crash. In the background, you can clearly hear 4 gunshots. What is this about?

Why were none of the journalists that accompany the president on the plane as usual?

What evidence is there that these people were on the plane to Smolensk at all apart from the passenger list issued by the authorities?

It is conceivable that the 100 top Polish leaders were rounded up in a purge and killed or kidnapped inside Poland and that the airplane accident in Russia was staged to explain their deaths.

Weather reports indicate clouds but little fog. According to the official version, however, the plane hit trees as it approached Smolensk airport in thick fog, and caught fire.

The damage of the plane shown is consistent with an explosion.

  10. Kaczynski Family Wants No Delay in Polish Funeral
    April 16 (Bloomberg)

The late Polish President Lech Kaczynski’s family wants his funeral to proceed as planned even if a cloud of volcanic ash disrupting air travel across Europe keeps world leaders such as U.S. President Barack Obama away.

Family members want the ceremony at Krakow’s Wawel castle to begin as scheduled on April 18 “under any circumstances,” Jacek Sasin, a minister in the presidential administration, said in a press conference carried live on TVN24 television.

The airspace above all of Poland’s airports except Rzeszow in the southeast is closed indefinitely...
