Israel getting shuffled around

Editor's note: New York remains the largest Jewish population center outside of Israel, with roughly 1.4 to 1.7 million Jews living across the state and metropolitan area. The Jewish population has deep cultural, religious, and economic influence throughout the city, especially in Brooklyn, where large Orthodox and Hasidic populations have built extensive networks of synagogues, schools, kosher businesses, and community institutions. The growing visibility of Israeli culture and cuisine in New York reflects the strong ties between American Jews and Israelis living abroad.

'Brain Drain' Accelerates: Thousands of High-Tech Developers Leave Israel

A new Israeli report warns that growing relocation, overseas expansion and declining R&D employment threaten Israel's technology sector.

Key Developments
• Israel recorded its first decline in research and development employment in a decade, losing approximately 3,500 workers.
• Israeli technology firms are increasingly shifting operations, management positions and research activities abroad, particularly to the United States and Eastern Europe.
• The Innovation Authority warned that continued relocation could gradually erode the foundations of Israel's long-standing technological advantage.

Growing Concerns over High-Tech Relocation

An annual report by Israel's Innovation Authority has highlighted growing concerns about a potential brain drain from the country’s technology sector, as more companies expand abroad and increasing numbers of employees seek relocation opportunities.

According to a report published in Yedioth Ahronoth on Sunday, the analysis found that only 62 percent of employees at private Israeli technology firms currently work inside Israel, while the remainder are based primarily in the United States.

More significantly, senior management and decision-making positions are increasingly being transferred overseas.

According to the report, the number of senior employees based in Israel declined by nearly 10 percent, while the number of senior personnel located in the United States increased.

First Decline in a Decade

The report recorded the first decrease in research and development employment in approximately ten years.

The number of R&D workers fell by about 3,500, while their share of the total technology workforce declined from 51 percent to 49 percent.

Israeli media cited several possible explanations, including increased use of artificial intelligence tools and growing incentives for companies to relocate activities abroad.

The report also noted that Israeli firms are increasingly shifting research and development operations to Eastern Europe and the United States, partly due to economic pressures stemming from exchange rates and international operating costs.
