Court Docs Reveal FBI Tool That Can Read Your Encrypted Private Signal Messages

Editor's note: Cellebrite (a subsidiary of the Japanese multinational Sunsoft) is an Israel-based tech firm mentioned in the following Great Game India news source. Even though the Israeli-based Cellebrite "vowed not to sell its data extraction services in sanctioned countries," Belarus used Cellebrite's data extraction services as well as officials in Hong Kong likely to get inside the iPhones of dissidents. Israel's Cellebrite also sold its services to Indonesia, a Muslim country with harsh laws against LGBT individuals and groups. It looks as though Israel's ministry of defense has the final say as to what country Israel can sell Cellebrite's data extraction services to. Cellebrite not only can be used to hack into Apple iPhones, but apparently Samsung smart phones as well as in the case of Saudi Arabia hiring Cellebrite's services.

As of January 21, 2021 Cellebrite hired the services of JP Morgan to lead its public offering (IPO) and is targeting a valuation of $2 billion "after seeing the prices at which other tech companies are being traded on U.S. markets." The FBI also thinks Cellebrite has value since their data extraction services can read private messaging on the Signal app. In other words, law enforcement, intelligence agencies, military entities, law firms, and security firms using Cellebrite can get inside anyone's smart phone specializing in mobile forensics for mobile data extraction. Makes you stop and consider for a very serious moment if you are an investigative journalist reporting on Israel doesn't it? More and more police are buying Cellebrite's services including in Scotland and Abu Dhabi.

Court documents from a recent gun-trafficking case in New York has revealed a tool by the FBI which can read your encrypted private messages on the Signal messenger application.
The court documents, filed by the Justice Department and obtained by Forbes, showed screenshots of Signal messages between men allegedly discussing an illegal weapons trade and attempted murder.

The screenshots reportedly showed metadata indicating that Signal had been decrypted on their phone when the device was in a certain state called "partial AFU," which stands for "after first unlock."

In this state, iPhones are more vulnerable to having their data extracted.

For law enforcement to access private Signal messages from an iPhone, it usually must be in AFU mode.

Still, a phone's vulnerability will depend heavily on how up to date it is.

Still, it remains unclear what tools the FBI would use to bypass encryption. Two of the most prominent iPhone forensics tools used by the agency are GrayKey and Cellebrite.

Vladimir Katalov, founder of the Russian forensics company ElcomSoft, told Forbes he believes GrayKey was the tool that the FBI used in the gun-trafficking case.

"It uses some very advanced approach using hardware vulnerabilities," Katalov said.

As GreatGameIndia reported earlier, it was the CIA that created the Signal app, funded by the US government to protect communications of its agents deployed for regime change.

Israel Threatens to Abandon America, Ally With China And Russia After Securing $40B In U.S. Aid

By Chris Menahan | Information Liberation | February. 11, 2021
Knesset member Ayoob Kara, who is part of Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party, on Tuesday threatened that Israel is prepared to abandon America and ally with China and Russia if Biden "reneges on America's recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights and signs a nuclear deal with Iran."

The public statement, which our media is refusing to report on, comes a little over one month after the US congress voted to pass a law mandating we send nearly $40 billion in aid to Israel over the next decade (even if, as Nancy Pelosi said, America "crumbles to the ground").

"If the United States does not continue to recognize Israel's sovereignty in the Golan Heights and drastically changes Trump's Iran policy, Israel will have to consider building a stronger relationship with Russia and China," Kara said, tweeting out a picture of himself with former US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman.

"Till now, Israel has always considered American interests in relations to Russia and China," Kara continued. "In the past, we even cancelled a major arms deal with China in order to appease the United States."

"Yet if Biden reneges on America's recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights and signs a nuclear deal with Iran, a deal that endangers the existence and the security of the State of Israel, we must work to build stronger strategic ties to China and Russia, starting with the Haifa port deal."

These are not idle threats. Israel has been buddying up with China for years. Even Mike Pompeo last year had to tell Netanyahu to back off on making so many deals with China.

As Kara noted, Israel has also gone ahead with the Haifa port deal with China despite US opposition.

Does this sound like our "greatest ally?"
