Bill Clinton paid $16.5M by Laureate Universities

Financial whistleblower Charles Ortel discusses money paid to Bill Clinton by Laureate Universities. Clinton University Scandal Netted Bill $16.5 Million

June 14, 2016

For all the attention the Trump University scandal has garnered throughout the 2016 election season, another education controversy has yet to receive as much outrage.

The Clinton's are adding another check to their list of questionable practices as their connection with the Laureate International Universities allegedly paid Bill Clinton $16.5 million. The payments were over 2010-2014 to the presumptive first gentleman to serve as "honorary chancellor" of the for-profit universities and college.

The Laureate Education received a sizable amount of money from the U.S. State Department, while Hillary Clinton was secretary of state.

Financial whistleblower Charles Ortel, who previously found gaps within Clinton's foundation, said on FOX Business Network's After the Bell that the disclosures from the foundation and Laureate transactions do not explain the money Bill was raking in.

"The same regulators who are looking at the Laureate transactions, the SEC, the state regulators, the foreign regulators, should now turn their attention to the Clinton filings and look at these discrepancies, they are massive," Ortel told host Melissa Francis.

Ortel said when he first saw the documents, he couldn't believe the filings from The Clinton Foundation had discrepancies.

"I took it around to a large number of experts, lawyers, accountants, etc., satisfied myself I was right. Then I satisfied myself that it's such political consequences that it will take time for the public to get it," Ortel said.

He went on to say neither the IRS nor the FBI has yet to approach him about his findings.

Laureate International Universities are the for-profit universities and colleges owned and operated by Laureate Education, of Baltimore, Maryland, in the United States. By 2014, the company owned and operated more than 80 institutions, both campus-based and online, in 30 countries, with total student enrollment of more than 800,000 students.

By 2010 the company owned more than 50 institutions, both campus-based and online, in 21 countries, with a total enrollment of about 550,000 students. In 2010, former U.S. President Bill Clinton became the "honorary chancellor" of the network, for an undisclosed compensation.

In December 2013, Laureate announced that its shareholders elected three independent directors: Robert B. Zoellick, former World Bank president; Judith Rodin, president of the Rockefeller Foundation; and George Muñoz, principal of the Muñoz Investment Banking Group.

Though former United States President Bill Clinton's role as a chancellor of Laureate was officially described as "honorary", from 2010 until early 2015, Bill Clinton brought in just short of $16.5 million for his role as honorary chancellor, including $2.5 million in 2011. These numbers were disclosed in his publicly released tax returns.

In April 2015, Clinton ended his ties with Laureate amidst ongoing financial problems at four of its six U.S.-based universities.

Clinton appeared at the Laureate Summit on Youth & Jobs at Universidad Europea de Madrid in 2013, Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas in 2013, Université Internationale de Casablanca in 2013, European University Cyprus in 2012, Universidad del Valle de México in 2012, Walden University's 2011 commencement ceremony, Istanbul Bilgi University in 2010 and INTI International University in 2010.

Lois Gail Lerner (born October 12, 1950) is an American attorney and former career federal employee. Lerner became director of the Exempt Organizations Unit [Clinton Foundation] of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in 2005, and subsequently became the central figure in the 2013 IRS targeting controversy. Lerner resigned over the controversy. An investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice [DoJ Pride] and Federal Bureau of Investigation, completed in 2015, "found no evidence that any IRS official acted based on political, discriminatory, corrupt, or other inappropriate motives that would support a criminal prosecution."
