“The Gaza flotilla raid, code named Operation Sea Breeze or Operation Sky Winds by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), was the boarding and seizure of six ships of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla in May 2010 that resulted in the deaths of nine passengers. The flotilla, organized by the Free Gaza Movement and the Turkish Foundation for Human Rights and Freedoms and Humanitarian Relief (IHH) was carrying humanitarian aid, medical supplies, and construction materials, destined for the Gaza Strip, and intended to break the Gaza Blockade. The six ships gathered near Cyprus, and departed on 30 May 2010 carrying 663 people from 37 countries. Israeli commandos seized the ships in international waters of the Mediterranean Sea after the flotilla refused Israel's requests to have the cargos inspected at the port of Ashdod and items permitted by Israel delivered by land. Activists aboard the flotilla's largest ship, the MV Mavi Marmara, clashed with Israeli Shayetet 13 special forces as they abseiled onto the deck of the vessel. Nine IHH activists were killed by the Israeli commandos, dozens were injured, and hundreds were detained. Seven Israeli commandos were injured. Israeli soldiers said they used their pistols only after their lives were endangered, while several activists on board said that the IDF opened fire on the ship before boarding. Israeli officials have accused the IHH of sending a group of activists on the MV Mavi Marmara determined to instigate violence; the IHH rejected the accusation.”

Ayers, Dohrn helped organize flotilla group By: Barbara Hollingsworth, Washington Examiner Former Weather Underground leaders William Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn [Northwestern lectures on Torture and Rwanda Genocide] as well as Code Pink founder Jodie Evans, helped organize the Free Gaza Movement, which launched the six-ship flotilla from Turkey to Israel that ended in a violent clash with Israeli Defense Forces, BigGovernment.com reported. In January, the trio were spotted in Egypt attempting to stir up crowds on the streets with 1,400 other left-wing activists after the Egyptian government refused to allow Free Gaza Movement members to enter the Gaza Strip. About 100 marchers were eventually allowed to cross the border, where they were met by former Hamas prime minister Ismail Haniyeh. BigGovernment quotes author Philip Weiss, who wrote that he witnessed Ayers and Dohrn arguing with fellow activists over whether to accept Egypt’s offer to allow a small number of them into Gaza”

“A Movement reimagining change: Freedom marchers head for Gaza By Bernardine Dohrn / The Rag Blog / December 31, 2009 More on the Gaza Freedom March, Below. CAIRO -- It has been a tumultuous 15 hours. Two buses, carrying 100 people from the GFM and loads of humanitarian supplies, just departed from Cairo for Gaza. This was a victory and a concession .. That action continues today. Bill [Ayers] and I went to the American Embassy at 10 a.m. and asked to see the Ambassador. We were ushered into a holding pen a block away from the embassy building where we joined 35 people already there, surrounded by Egyptian soldiers .. Late last night, it was announced at the nightly team leaders’ meeting that our three days of actions across Cairo, the international pressure around the world, and consistent efforts by CodePink leadership to meet with high level Egyptian officials -- including a meeting yesterday at the offices of Suzanne Mubarak -- resulted in an agreement with the Egyptian government that two buses could leave for the Rafah crossing into Gaza early Wednesday .. By mid-evening, whole delegations (South Africa, New York) announced that they would not participate. In part, they critiqued the process of decision-making; in part, they took the position, “all of us or none.” .. It was clear to us in the hours of debate and delay that some would leave for Gaza, and that others would stay in Cairo to press the demand that the border be opened, the blockade ended, and that all of the GFM participants be allowed to enter Gaza. One of the great difficulties throughout these several days has been to keep ourselves and all participants focused on Gaza. We find ourselves unwillingly in Cairo, drawn into clashes with authorities and one another on side issues, when what we most want it to keep our eyes on the Palestinian people and our spirits with those confined in Gaza. This is the challenge of the next three days. A large group of us is planning to try to walk to Gaza starting tomorrow, December 31. Buses and taxis containing smaller groups have been turned back all week, and the situation remains fluid, dynamic, and fraught.”

“Jenin on the high seas jkay@nationalpost.com According to the IDF, not all of the activists on board the ships were the pacifists they claimed to be. Though the Free Gaza leaders said they would not resist Israeli enforcement of the embargo, some of them fought the Israeli boarding parties with iron clubs — as confirmed by video that has been made available to the media. More seriously, it is claimed that at least one of the activists took two handguns from the Israelis and fired at the soldiers. In the melee, at least 10 activists were believed to have been killed, and several Israeli commandos wounded. “They beat us up with metal sticks and knives,” one Israeli commando told the Los Angeles Times. “There was live fire at some point against us. … They were shooting at us from below deck.” Based on the same source, the Times also reported that “activists tossed some of the soldiers from the top deck to the lower deck and the soldiers jumped in the water to save themselves. Activists grabbed some soldiers and tried to hold them hostage, stripping them of their helmets and equipment.” If this narrative stands up, then every drop of blood spilled on Monday morning rests on the hands of those activists who initiated the deadly exchange. When you attack Israeli soldiers — or at any soldiers — with lethal force, they will respond in kind. As for the events that unfolded after the deadly exchange commenced, we don’t know how much of the ensuing bloodshed was avoidable. Like all civilized nations, Israel likes to conduct its anti-terrorist operations in a measured, deliberate fashion. But that’s difficult in the close confines of a crowded ship, where combat takes place at the range of a few metres — especially, in the case of the Free Gaza flotilla, which was populated by a diverse mob spanning the gamut from naive Jewish grandmothers to full-fledged Islamist radicals. For most of the world, of course, these facts won’t matter: Like the bogus Jenin massacre, this episode will be used as just another stick to beat the Jewish state — even by those same pundits and activists who can’t be roused to say a single word when genuine “massacres” unfold in other parts of the world, such as the slaughter of more than 90 members of the Ahmadi sect in Pakistan. On sea, as on land, this is the double-standard that Israel always must battle when it acts to defend itself against terrorists and their media-savvy enablers. “Jenin riddle: Why did an Israeli soldier shoot a British official in the back? Jonathan Cook in Jenin, Chris McGreal in Jerusalem and Ewen MacAskill The Guardian, Saturday 7 December 2002 02.01 GMT Stand where the Israeli army sniper stood and the questions come flooding in. Foremost among them is how the soldier who shot Iain Hook in the back in Jenin refugee camp could have mistaken the lanky British UN official with a mobile phone to his ear for a Palestinian youth waving a gun, as the army claims. The sniper was only 25 metres from his victim, in daylight, and he had a telescopic sight. British officials say they are determined that the Israelis will not be allowed to get away with a cursory investigation into Mr Hook's killing a fortnight ago. Whitehall, in turn, is under pressure from Hook's two sons, both British officers, who visited the site of his death and came away sceptical about the Israeli version of events. Sources in Whitehall say that the Foreign Office is unhappy about the delay in providing an explanation, and that British diplomats in Jerusalem meet the Israelis every day to press the issue. .. Hook, 54, from Felixstowe in Suffolk, died on November 22 after the Israeli army swept into Jenin refugee camp searching for a particular "terrorist". The subsequent fighting was intense. The army's hunt focused on buildings around the small UN compound where Hook worked for The Crown Estate, the British agency which manages crown property on behalf of the government. He led a project to rebuild Jenin camp, large parts of which were destroyed by the Israeli army in April .. . Israeli soldiers have long regarded the UN as collaborators with the Palestinians. The sight of a gunman sheltering behind Hook would have reinforced their hostility. When Hook failed to achieve a ceasefire, Palestinians trying to get in to the compound knocked a hole in the wall. He telephoned Capt Lerner and left a message. "Hi Peter, it's Iain here. I'm just making a progress report, really. "We're pinned down in the compound. The shabab [young men] have knocked a hole in the wall, which I'm not happy about at all. I'm trying to keep them out and I will just keep my people pinned down in the corner until I hear from you." Twenty minutes later Hook walked out of his office and into the courtyard. Shortly after that, the sniper's bullet caught him in the back .. The following correction was printed in the Guardian's Corrections and Clarifications column, Tuesday December 10 2002 Iain Hook did not work for the crown estate, as we mistakenly said above. He worked for Crown [Sisters] Agents, a British company with a long record of humanitarian assistance with the UN, the World Bank, the European Commission and other donors and global organisations.”

“The Israel Project Qatar-based Initiative Encouraged Action against Israel: Foreign Agents Registration Act document filed by Fenton Communications (pdf)

A U.S. Justice Department document shows that Fenton Communications, a U.S. public relations firm, has been working for “Al Fakhoora,” a Qatar-based pro-Palestinian initiative that participated in the illegal flotilla to Gaza last month and urged action against Israel .. Al Fakhoora is supported by the office of Her Highness Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned, the second wife of the emir of Qatar. According to a document filed by Fenton under the Foreign Agents Registration Act of 1938, Her Highness’ office agreed to pay Fenton approximately $240,000 for communications services rendered from March 1 – Aug. 31, 2010. Fenton distributes materials through Al Fakhoora’s Web site, which includes a Facebook page and a “Flotilla Action Alert” urging activists to oppose Israel’s blockade on Hamas-controlled Gaza. Israel considers Gaza-bound convoys a security risk and has implemented a maritime blockade on Gaza because of Hamas’ ongoing efforts to smuggle Iranian rockets and other weaponry since the Iran-backed group overthrew the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority in a bloody coup there in June 2007. Historically, ships bound for Gaza have carried tons of weapons among their cargo. Click here for examples of previous Gaza-bound ships carrying weapons .. Al Fakhoora’s director, Farooq Burney, a Canadian national, was aboard a Turkish ship in the Gaza-bound convoy when passengers attacked Israeli military personnel trying to intercept the vessel May 31 .. Also, a number of flotilla activists discussed the possibility they might die and become martyrs, or shahids, in the course of attempting to reach Gaza in their vessels before they had even set out. The organizers held a press conference in the Turkish city of Antalya before the flotilla sailed, tasking all the participants to write their wills before departing. Walid Al-Tabtabai, a Kuwaiti member of parliament, was among those who wrote a will before leaving on the flotilla. One of the Turkish nationals killed on board had told his family just before joining the flotilla, “I am going to be a shahid; I dreamt I will become a shahid – I saw in a dream that I will be killed. Israel’s Foreign Ministry released new video footage Friday (June 18) showing IHH leader Bulent Yildirim aboard the Mavi Marmara prior to the incident, calling for violence against an Israeli soldiers .. When asked if people used wooden clubs, metal rods or any other objects, Burney said, “No, it was just basically hand-to hand combat…no [weapons], none at all.” However, IDF video footage shows passengers beating soldiers with metal bars and chairs. The IDF also released a video overview of weapons confiscated from the ship, which included knives, metal bars, slingshots, smoke bombs, bulletproof vests, gas masks, wrenches, clubs and rocks. In addition, gun sights and rifle cartridges incompatible with IDF firearms were reportedly discovered, suggesting passengers may have had guns but threw them overboard. In a June 15 open letter to Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Burney and two other Canadians who were on the ship accused the Canadian government of an insufficient response to the flotilla incident and “assisting with the slow genocide of the Palestinian people in Gaza.””

Prior to joining CA-USA, Ms. Pham worked for the US Department of Commerce [Remember murder of Commerce Secreatry Ron Brown] . She was responsible for implementing trade-related technical assistance projects in the Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa. Before her career with Commerce, she worked for several nonprofit organizations. 1. Why did you decide on working in international development?

I am passionate about international development work because of my personal background. I was born in Vietnam and left at the end of the war when I was five years old. My family arrived in the US as refugees, and if it had not been for the many people who helped us along the way, I would not be living the American Dream today. I feel extremely lucky to be living the life that I have now, and believe it is important that I make a positive contribution to society in return. 2. In which countries do you have experience? I have worked in Bahrain, Cameroon, Egypt, Ghana, Ireland, Mongolia, the Netherlands, Oman, UAE, Qatar, Senegal, and Uganda. 3. What is the most challenging aspect about your work? Juggling five projects spread across three continents! The time difference is always a challenge.”

“Crown Agents is exactly what its name implies, an agent of Her Majesty the Queen. It was founded in 1833 as Crown Agents for the Colonies, and historically played a vital role in the creation and management of what British historians call the Third Empire .. Crown Agents printed the stamps and banknotes of the colonies; provided technical, engineering, and financial services; served as private bankers to the colonial monetary authorities, government officials, and heads of state; served as arms procurers, quartermasters, and paymasters for the colonial armies .. Her Majesty's Murder, Inc. .. Crown Agents' range of ``services''--arms procurement, border controls, offshore banking--also nicely fit the ``administrative requirements'' of the world's organized crime cartels .. review of some of the more sordid aspects of the recent history of Crown Agents, suggests that the firm has been at the center of the British Crown's highly sensitive patronage of global organized crime--what EIR long ago dubbed Dope, Inc.”
