Web down: Thousands of sites worldwide go dark after cloud services provider Akamai reports DNS 'issue'

Editor's note: Here comes the self-inflicted cyber attacks. One of the biggest mysteries on the flying events of 911, was the alleged death of Daniel Lewin who was a passenger on American Airlines FLT 11. Flight 11 supposedly crashed into North Tower of the World Trade Center Buildings on September 11, 2001. Lewin was an American–Israeli mathematician and entrepreneur who co-founded the internet company Akamai Technologies mentioned in this RT News article. Lewin served for four years in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) with the official story "he served as an officer in Sayeret Matkal, one of the IDF's special forces units." Sounds like a good cover story as well as being the "hero on Flight 11."  Incredible, a geek mathematician who is a badass with his hands. Lewin attended Technion, the Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa while simultaneously working at IBM's research laboratory. Figure out the circumstances related to Daniel Lewin's death/disappearance and that might solve one of the biggest mysteries of 911.

Video games, travel, web streaming services, banking, and shipping were among the industries affected by a problem with cloud provider Akamai Technologies, which appeared to have taken thousands of websites offline worldwide.

Google, AT&T, Amazon Web Services, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and GoDaddy domain services were among the companies that started reporting outages on Thursday morning.

Gaming platforms Steam and PlayStation Network, travel services Expedia and Airbnb, shipping giants UPS and FedEx, and banking and financial institutions such as Chase, Discover, Capital One, Fidelity, and American Express were among others to report disruptions to their web services.

The problem appears to be due to an "emergency issue" with the Edge DNS service at the provider Akamai, which said it was "aware" of the problem and "actively investigating" it. The Domain Name System (DNS) acts as the internet directory, translating website names (URL) into IP addresses.

Shortly before 1pm Eastern Time, Akamai issued an update saying it had "implemented a fix" that had resulted in the service "resuming normal operations." The company said the incident was "not a result of a cyberattack," but occurred when "a software configuration update triggered a bug in the DNS system."
