Social Distancing With Kids? Consider These Ways To Make Staying Home Feel Like A Staycation
By Robin Raven | March 15, 2020
As of March 14, 2020, the United States is under a Level 2 Travel Advisory because of the COVID-19 pandemic. To stop the spread of SARS-CoV-2, which is widely being called the novel coronavirus, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends social distancing. Many schools are temporarily closing across the nation, and several major stores such as Apple are shutting down for at least a couple of weeks.
Lots of families now have unexpected time together. Whether you had your spring vacation plans canceled or simply want to help your kids have a more enjoyable experience during what can be a challenging time, consider these ways to make the time your kids spend at home feel like a staycation. This is a serious time that needs to be handled sensitively, but there’s no harm in adding joy to your children’s lives while you protect them during this uncertain time.

Involve KIds In Choosing A Theme For The Staycation Choose a dream destination where you want to bring your family in the future. Make sure every member of the family is excited about the locale, then plan the theme for your staycation around that specific destination. That can help build the anticipation for when you are able to travel to the locale. Meanwhile, it can give kids a sense of being somewhere else while they’re at home.
Bring the theme to life for your children in a wide variety of ways. Let your creativity run wild. For example, if you want to go to Ireland, plan an Irish-themed staycation that includes time to look at photos and videos of the country. Get Irish music to play as the soundtrack to your time at home. Watch online tutorials of Irish dancing, then try it at home. Enlist your kids’ help in preparing a plant-based Irish meal with dishes like vegan shepherd’s pie and soda bread. Tell your kids to pretend the television is a movie theater screen, then watch movies that were filmed in Ireland. Also, buy a small themed gift for each child as their souvenir of the staycation.

A brilliant video by Juan Delcan, which explains social distancing and why it's not just about individual rights, in twelve seconds. So simple, even Brendan O’Neill should get it. #covid_19 pic.twitter.com/hM2sMOMG3B— Alex Andreou (@sturdyAlex) March 16, 2020
