September 23, 2013 (WLS) -- The ABC7 I-Team has learned that U.S. authorities suspect several Americans are involved in that terrorist takeover of a Kenya shopping mall. At least 62 are dead and the siege continues in Nairobi.
The standoff is now in its third night. Authorities in Kenya and the U.S. believe there were at least 17 attackers who stormed the Westgate Mall in Nairobi, and two may have been killed. Investigators say one of the terrorists with al-Shabaab, an al-Qaeda offshoot, is believed to be from Illinois. Several others are from Minneapolis and Kansas City. The al-Shabaab organization has a growing presence in the U.S., and according to federal agents, is known to be recruiting in Illinois and throughout the Midwest.
They were shots heard halfway around the world when gunmen with the Somalia-based al-Shabaab terror group blitzed a popular shopping mall. Homeland security officials in Chicago and Minneapolis were paying particular attention.

"The concentration of unemployed, young Somali men in places like Minneapolis/St. Paul are sort of ripe to radicalize," said Brad Garrett, former FBI agent.
U.S. intelligence officials say al-Shabaab is one of the only al-Qaeda splinter groups to actually recruit here in the U.S. for operations overseas. American investigators count about 50 known U.S. converts to radical al-Shabaab. That includes Chicagoan Shaker Masri, who is now serving a 10-year sentence for his role in an al-Shabaab plot that included a planned suicide attack on soldiers.
At a Muslim center in Minneapolis Monday afternoon, Islamic leaders said they were outraged that several hometown radicals and a man from Illinois were linked to the Nairobi mall attack.
"This outrageous act of violence has no place in Islam. The perpetrators of this barbaric act do not share our Islamic values. In fact, extremists groups and its affiliate al-Shabaab, have done more harm to Islam and Muslims over the years," said Abdisalam Adam, Somali-American.
"They are organized gang of bandits or criminals who have conspired to kill and destroy innocent lives. And their main goal is to destabilize countries to create chaos in the world and destroy innocent lives," said Ibrahim Baraki, Kenya community activist.
An investigation by the House Homeland Security Committee found that al-Shabaab is recruiting young American Muslims in not only Illinois and Minnesota but also Missouri, New York, New Jersey, Texas and California.
On Monday, those community leaders put out a stern warning to teenagers who are approached by extremist recruiters: don't get involved.

Kenya terror attack: Canadian victim Annemarie Desloges remembered for her dedication to foreign service
As Annemarie Desloges was remembered by her foreign service colleagues as “one of our bright young lights” on Sunday, the second Canadian killed in Kenya’s deadly mall attack was identified.

Vancouver-area businessman Naguib Damji was also killed in Saturday’s siege at Nairobi’s upscale Westgate mall. Dozens of people lost their lives in the devastating attack and nearly 200 others were injured.
Damji’s daughter, Karima Damji, said Sunday evening that the family would be releasing more details about her father, but were dealing with his loss at the moment.
Condolences and memories poured in on her Facebook page, where Damji was remembered as kind, full of life and a “great soul.”
Three other Canadians, including Desloges’ husband, Robert Munk, were injured. Munk has since been released from hospital.
The other two wounded Canadians, whose names have not been disclosed, remain under medical care, said the Department of Foreign Affairs.
The Prime Minister’s Office first confirmed Saturday night that Desloges, 29, was among the two Canadians killed in the attack. She is the first Canadian diplomat killed on posting since 2006.
On Sunday, a clearer picture of Desloge’s life and career emerged — one of a child who grew up in a foreign service family, accompanying her parents on postings.
“Annemarie’s death inflicts a deep wound on the foreign service community . . . . Today we grieve the loss not only of a warm and intelligent friend and colleague, but a lifetime’s potential tragically unfilled,” said Tim Edwards, president of the Professional Association of Foreign Service Officers in a lengthy statement.
The Ottawa-native is survived by her parents, Michel and Madeleine, her sister Julie and brother-in-law Laurent.
A public servant with the federal government since 2006, Desloges joined the immigration stream of the foreign service in 2008.
Previously posted in Delhi, she had been working out of the Canadian High Commission in Nairobi for the past two years. She had recently moved from handling refugee claims to working as a liaison officer for the Canada Border Services Agency, said the statement. “She understood well the challenges and hazards of diplomatic life, but believed resolutely in its importance and looked forward to a long career in the foreign service,” said the statement. “She took great joy in her work and, like her parents and sister, was deeply proud to serve Canada.”
Desloges was the first Canadian diplomat killed on posting since Glyn Berry died in 2006 in Afghanistan.

Desloges and Munk were students at Carleton University’s Norman Patterson School of International Affairs. The university’s president, Roseann O’Reilly Runte, told the Star that flags on campus would be flown at half-mast on Monday, and that the school would be speaking with the families.

“[MI-3’s Eye in the Sky] Launched in November 1995, RADARSAT-1 provided Canada and the world with an operational radar satellite system capable of timely delivery of large amounts of data. Equipped with a powerful synthetic aperture radar (SAR) instrument, it acquired images of the Earth day or night, in all weather and through cloud cover, smoke and haze.
RADARSAT-1 was a Canadian-led project involving the Canadian federal government, the Canadian provinces, the United States, and the private sector. It provided useful information to both commercial and scientific users in such fields as disaster management, interferometry, agriculture, cartography, hydrology, forestry, oceanography, ice studies and coastal monitoring.

Its data could be useful in many types of emergencies. When, for example, in January 1997, the Russian oil tanker Hakhodka ran aground near Japan, causing the worst oil spill in that country's history, RADARSAT-1 images provided to Japanese authorities in the hours following the disaster allowed clear identification of the location and extent of the spill. This helped manage cleanup operations. In the spring of 1997, Manitoba residents were faced with one of the worst floods in their history. Local and military officials were quickly provided with images showing the progress and extent of the flood. These images assisted authorities in flood management operations.
2. Why did RADARSAT-1 collect data on Canada's North? The data collected by RADARSAT-1 helped the Canadian Ice Service (CIS) create daily ice charts. These were vital to the Canadian Coast Guard, commercial fishermen, maritime transport industries, and marine petroleum exploration teams. For example, in August 1996, the Canadian Coast Guard used RADARSAT images to assist the American cruise ship Hanseatic, which ran ashore on ice in the Arctic Ocean with 200 passengers aboard.
3. What did RADARSAT-1 look for on land? RADARSAT-1 could obtain data on such factors as soil humidity, forests, flood damage, surface topography, and crop conditions. For example, rice, the staple food for two-thirds of the world's people, is cultivated in wet regions that are often cloudy or rainy, where it might be difficult for optical satellites to gather images. RADARSAT-1 could collect information in all weather conditions and cloud cover, so rice harvests could be managed more efficiently.
4. Did RADARSAT-1 help detect underground features?
RADARSAT-1 sensitivity to topography and relief made it an invaluable tool during geological investigations. Many of our most vital natural resources such as natural gas, minerals, water, and oil are found underground, beneath typical features that the satellite can detect.

It provided information on features such as surface waves so we can better understand the oceans and their impact on our climate. These data were used by meteorological services, the fishing industry, and oceanographers. RADARSAT-1 was used to detect icebergs in Newfoundland and Labrador.

ReplyDeleteIn 2002, Danielle Van Dam was found murdered in Glamis?, California. The father(cf. Damon Van Dam) was a employee of QUALCOMM as a software engineer. David Westerfield(cf. MitM) was convicted of the murder of the seven year old Danielle Van Dam. The San Diego Padres use to play at the old Westgate Park. Now, they play at the Qualcomm Stadium. Recently, there was the MI-3 KENYAN mall massacre which apparently involved the killing of over sixty people. Reportedly, an employee of QUALCOMM escaped from said Kenyan mall massacre.
In conclusion, while living in an apartment complex(cf. Somerset i.e.9/11 flight 93 crash site in Pennsylvania ) in Glendale Heights, Illinois, I found a small white box on the outside entrance steps in 1999. Inside said box was a key chain lock with the word logo "Qualcomm®" printed on it.
If 9/11 flight 93 had hit the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., the control of the U.S. government would come under the control of the DOJ & the state of ILLINOIS(cf. Northwestern University and the Chicago people).
Also, in 1999 the state of ILLINOIS confiscated my firearm while out of the same apartment complex(cf. Somerset) there, reportedly, was a gun running enterprise operating selling firearms to individuals in the city of Chicago without federal or court permission.
