“(BBC) The Pakistani doctor who allegedly used a fake hepatitis B vaccination campaign to obtain DNA samples of Osama Bin Laden's family in Abbottabad a year ago may have become an unsuspecting pawn in the intelligence war between the United States and Pakistan. Dr Shakil Afridi was arrested by Pakistani intelligence agents on 22 May, 20 days after a secret US raid killed Bin Laden. On Wednesday, an official of the tribal administration in Khyber region sentenced him to jail for 33 years on charges of treason. Military officials here believe that the DNA samples he obtained may have led the Americans to Bin Laden's lair. The question being asked is, if he really thought he had brought harm to the Pakistani security establishment, why didn't he leave the country during the 20 days that the Pakistanis took to discover him? One possible explanation comes from a former Central Intelligence Agency agent, Reuel Marc Gerecht. "I am under the impression that actually [Dr Afridi] could have chosen to leave Pakistan; that the [CIA] offered him that option; he chose not to because he thought this action would be welcomed [in Pakistan]," he told the BBC. But there is no way of confirming Mr Gerecht's views on the Pakistani end as there is no one available to explain what went on in Dr Afridi's mind during those 20 days. 'Following orders' His family disappeared from his home in Peshawar's Hayatabad neighbourhood within a week of his arrest and have not been accessible to the media since then. Officials believe the DNA samples Dr Afridi obtained brought the Americans to Bin Laden's home His colleagues in the health department at Khyber, where he served as the area surgeon, are tight-lipped about his activities or any thoughts he might have shared with them. And he never underwent a regular trial where he could have narrated his side of the story. A brief insight into what he did or did not know is provided by a retired brigadier of the Pakistani army, Shaukat Qadir, who conducted his own private investigation into the Abbottabad raid. Quoting Inter Service Intelligence (ISI) officials privy to Dr Afridi's interrogation, Brig Qadir suggests he probably did not know he was helping the Americans track down Bin Laden. "Shakil [Afridi] had no idea of whom or what he was looking for. He was merely paid [allegedly by Marcy’s NSAWW colleagues through the DOJ Asset Forfeiture Fund] to follow instructions," he writes in his report. According to him, Dr Afridi did get suspicious by late April 2011 that there might be a high-value target in the Abbottabad compound, but he still didn't know who it was. Brig Qadir doesn't clarify if Dr Afridi was aware that he was actually working for the CIA. If Brig Qadir's information is correct, then that explains why Dr Afridi was not in any particular hurry to leave Pakistan. He apparently didn't know much. Peter King, in an interview with the Fox News, said that this has been handled very poorly by the US authorities right from the time of the raid. While accusing the Obama administration in the light of Dr Shakeel’s sentence for treason by Pakistani authorities, King said, “They put him there. They disclosed his identity.” The sentence is viewed by Western officials as punishment for humiliating the nation which claimed not to know it was harbouring the al Qaeda leader. Dr Shakeel Afridi helped the CIA by running a fake vaccination programme that allowed him to collect the DNA of bin Laden’s children from the family compound in Abbottabad. Sample analysis confirmed the terror leader was probably there and triggered the deadly mission by US Navy SEAL last May. It sparked a major rift between the US and Pakistani leaders. US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta confirmed in January that Dr Afridi collected DNA in an effort to help locate the al Qaeda leader, but added he “was not in any way treasonous towards Pakistan. For them to take this kind of action against somebody who was helping to go after terrorism is a real mistake”. US officials have already started rallying on the doctor’s behalf, urging the Pakistani government to overturn the sentence which is said to include hard labour and extensive fines. “What Dr Afridi did is the furthest thing from treason. It was a courageous, heroic and patriotic act, which helped to locate the most wanted terrorist in the world,” Senators John McCain and Carl Levin wrote in a joint statement. It is not clear if Dr Afridi knew who the target of the investigation was when the CIA recruited him, or what DNA he actually collected in the fake hepatitis B vaccination programme. Dr Afridi was accused of having taken half a dozen cooler boxes without authorisation. Earlier, the Conservative legal group Judicial Watch revealed that the Obama administration arranged for Hollywood filmmakers to have special access to government officials involved in the commando operation that killed Osama bin Laden.”

Dr Shakeel Afridi was accused of gaining vital information for US intelligence by organising a fake vaccination program in the area containing the former al-Qaeda leader's walled compound in the garrison town of Abbottabad. But in Washington, a senior US official with knowledge of counter-terrorism operations told FOX News Channel, "The doctor was never asked to spy on Pakistan. He was asked only to help locate al Qaeda terrorists, who threaten Pakistan and the US". "He helped save Pakistani and American lives. His activities were not treasonous, they were heroic and patriotic." Afridi was taken into custody by Pakistan's Inter Services Intelligence agency and later fired as a government doctor. Pakistani officials recovered a GPS device that they said was given to him by US intelligence to arrange meetings with his handlers. Afridi was found guilty under the tribal justice system of Khyber district, part of Pakistan's semi-autonomous tribal belt, AFP reported. He was also fined 320,000 rupees ($US3,500). Mohammad Siddiq, spokesman for the administrative head of Khyber, said, "He has been sentenced for 33 years on treason charges and has been moved to Peshawar central jail after the verdict was announced by the local court". In January, US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta confirmed Afridi worked for US intelligence by collecting DNA to verify bin Laden's presence. A US Navy SEAL team killed the al-Qaeda leader in the northwestern city of Abbottabad on May 2, 2011, but were not 100 per cent sure he was living in the compound before the raid. Afridi obtained the telephone number for the compound's owner, Abu Ahmed al Kuwaiti - bin Laden's right-hand man and courier. The number Afridi obtained enabled al Kuwaiti's voice to be recorded and provided the final confirmation that the tall figure seen by drones in the compound was bin Laden.”
