THE worst-case scenario in WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange's long-running crusade through the courts just got a whole lot worse, according to analysts yesterday, following speculation the US could issue spying charges against him. Lawyers in the case of Bradley Manning, the US soldier charged with stealing military secrets to send to WikiLeaks, have produced logs of online chats that claim to show Mr Assange coaching the private on how to break passwords to gain access to military computer networks anonymously. The logs are the first evidence the US government has revealed alleging that Mr Assange played an active role in helping Private Manning to remove and transmit classified files from a top-secret facility in Iraq, laying him open to criminal charges in the US. The fate awaiting Mr Assange could be much more serious than that in Sweden if the Americans decided to pursue his extradition. Julian Knowles QC said Mr Assange would have an even bigger legal fight on his hands. "This is the first overt sign that the US is looking to extradite Assange so, from that point of view, if I were him I would be concerned," Mr Knowles said. "There is no doubt that the penalties he would face in the US are very much more serious than in Sweden." Mr Knowles added that the US was unlikely to make its move until Mr Assange's battle to fight extradition to Sweden on rape charges was over. "It appears his human rights will be protected," Senator Ludlam said. His hopes of securing a guarantee from the Swedish government that Assange would not be handed on to the US were not realised.
