One Nation Senator Malcolm Roberts makes his maiden speech in the Senate at Parliament House in Canberra on Tuesday.
One Nation leader Pauline Hanson has endorsed a surprising call from her Senator Malcolm Roberts to withdraw from the United Nations.
Making his first speech in parliament on Tuesday, newly elected WA Senator Mr Roberts argued Australia needed an "OzExit" from the "insidious and unelected swill" of the UN.
The call for Australia to follow Britain's exit from the European Union was part of a wide-ranging speech that took in climate change and banking conspiracies, as well as plenty of praise for his leader.
Mr Roberts said the UN was destroying Australia's sovereignty through deals such as Agenda 21, a non-binding agreement that surrounded sustainable development.
"Australian values and way of life are also at risk from insidious institutions such as the unelected swill that is the United Nations," he said. "Australia must leave the UN. We need an OzExit."
At one stage during the speech, when the camera cut to Ms Hanson, the party leader and newly elected senator appeared to shake her head and roll her eyes as Mr Roberts heaped praise on her.
But Ms Hanson has taken to Facebook to protest against reports she was rolling her eyes.
"I just wanted to say thank you to Malcolm Roberts for his praise during his maiden speech today," she said.
"Contrary to the ABC and some other narrow-minded media outlets, I wasn't rolling my eyes out of disrespect to Malcolm's kind words, I was simply embarrassed.
"After 20 years of having most people in the public eye slander and take potshots, I guess I don't take compliments too well."
Asked about Mr Roberts' controversial remarks in a TV interview this morning, Ms Hanson praised her senator's speech.
"What a fantastic speech, he got a standing ovation," she said.
Ms Hanson went on to say she supported Mr Roberts' call for Australia to exit the UN.
"Too right! They've dictated to us over the years," she said. "We have people who can't even get their own country into gear, running riot, and they're telling us how to run our countries?"
Citing the refugee program as an example, Ms Hanson said she believed Australia had made a mistake by signing thousands of treaties.
"There's a lot of things that I want to take back control of our country by our people, so let's make sure we get it right," she said.
After "just flicking thought the Vienna convention", host of Today Karl Stefanovic warned Ms Hanson withdrawing from the UN might be against the law.
"It'll be World War III, Pauline, you're going to create such conflict," he warned.
Ms Hanson laughed off the suggestion.
"Look what we've done now, opened up the border, bring in all the rubbish from India and China and other countries when we can produce a lot cheaper and far better quality here in Australia. I don't think these treaties have done us any good; what about Agenda 21? I can go on and on," she said.

The controversial party leader is scheduled to make her own much-anticipated first speech in the Senate this afternoon.
It's anticipated the One Nation leader will canvass party policies such as immigration, the family court, and other issues.
But it's understood the speech, which is being kept top-secret, will go beyond her normal addresses.
The speech will be just four days out from the 20th anniversary of her infamous maiden speech to the House of Representatives delivered on September 10, 1996. As the then-member for Oxley, Ms Hanson caused ripples when she questioned multiculturalism and warned Australia was being "swamped by Asians".
That speech caused outrage among ethnic groups, indigenous Australians, several senior federal ministers, and the opposition.
Then prime minister John Howard was reluctant to personally condemn the one-time Liberal candidate, arguing she had the right to speak her mind.
But speaking on Today this morning, Ms Hanson claimed the Howard government had adopted many of the points she suggested in her speech as policy.
"Hopefully with today with my maiden speech they are going to pick up some policies and run with it," she said.
