There has been a spate of high-profile attacks on farmers in the country, including a woman who was brutally raped in front of her children.

Nicky, 45, who did not want to give her surname, was subjected to a horrifying attack that also saw her young daughter molested in her family's Eastern Cape farmhouse.

But shockingly, she was denied a humanitarian visa to Australia, where she and her husband had been hoping to relocate and run a farm.

"It was a glimmer of hope, but it's concerning that nothing has ever come of it," she told The Australian.

"I speak for thousands of South African farmers: we need a lifeline. The violence here is escalating."

Attacks of this kind in the country have been increasing, with 22 farmers murdered this year alone.

Another farmer, Mariandra Harris, described being viciously assaulted in an attack that saw her husband killed.

In a harrowing account, she told the Daily Caller how armed men broke in when she was heavily pregnant and terrorised the family.

Australia’s Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton has said white South Africans need "special attention" from the country's asylum department, requesting they "accept and consider" such applications.

He said last year: "If people are being persecuted – regardless of whether it's because of religion or the colour of their skin or whatever – we need to provide assistance where we can."
