Hillary Clinton's Axis of Evil

by Pepe Escobar

Let's cut to the chase; Hillary Clinton is ready to go to war against Russia in Syria – with inbuilt, potentially terrifying, thermonuclear consequences.

Anticipating an outcome of the US presidential election as a remix of the 1972 Nixon landslide, Hillary has also coined, George "Dubya" Bush-style, a remixed axis of evil: Russia, Iran and "the Assad regime".

That's not even counting China, which, via "aggression" in the South China Sea, will also feature as a certified foe for the Founding Mother of the pivot to Asia.

And if all that was not worrying enough, Turkey now seems on the path to join the axis.

President Putin and President Erdogan met in Istanbul. Moscow positioned itself as ready to develop large-scale military-technical cooperation with Ankara.

That includes, of course, the $20 billion, Rosatom-built, four-reactor Akkuyu nuclear power plant. And the drive to "speed up the work" on Turkish Stream – which will de facto strengthen even more Russia's position in the European gas market, bypassing Ukraine for good, while sealing Ankara's position as a key East-West energy crossroads.

In addition, both Moscow and Ankara back UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura's position that "moderate rebels" (the Beltway's terminology) holding eastern Aleppo hostage must be eradicated.
The geopolitical game-changer is self-evident. As much as Erdogan may be a whirling political dervish, impossible to fathom and trust, while Putin is a master of the strategic long game, Moscow's and Ankara's interests tend to converge in the New Great Game; and that spells out closer integration in the dawn of the Eurasian Century.
Quite a cup of hemlock for Hillary Clinton, who has already equated Putin with Hitler.

Russia and Iran Fly Across a Key Threshold in the Middle East

by Mark Thompson

Relations between Iran and Russia continue to warm

Looks like the U.S. and its allies have a new "axis of evil" in the Middle East: Syria, Iran and Russia. The growing pro-Moscow alliance got a big boost Tuesday after Iran allowed Russia to fly its bombers from one of its bases to attack rebels in Syria.

Relations between Iran and Russia continue to warm. Moscow recently provided Tehran with a sophisticated air-defense system after Iran agreed to international curbs on its nuclear-development program. It's another poke at Russia's growing influence in the region at the expense of the U.S., which has steadfastly declined to involve itself in the bloody Syrian civil war. [AD note: This is not a "civil war" taking place in Syria as is being stated by the media including TIME. This is an external threat to the existence of the country of Syria using a complicated network of financing and weapons sales through Saudi Arabia and Qatar using a foreign mercenary force who have nothing whatsoever to do with Islam who have been destroying Syria beginning in March, 2011.]

"The Russians are out to win the 'Great Game,'" says Anthony Zinni, a retired Marine general who oversaw U.S. military operations in this part of the world from 1997 to 2000. He's referring to the 19th Century clash between the British and Russian empires for territory between them, focused largely in and around Afghanistan. "This time," Zinni adds, the Russians are going "a little further west."

"Moscow is once again flexing its military muscle, in bold and unexpected directions outside its immediate neighborhood—this time from Iran," said David Barno, a retired Army lieutenant general who commanded all U.S. and allied troops in Afghanistan from 2003 to 2005. "It reminds us again that [Russian president Vladimir] Putin wants Russia to be seen once more as a major military power—and one that will not be shy about poking the United States and its friends in the eye at every opportunity." [AD note: TIME mentions nothing whatsoever about the destruction of Iraq, Libya, Yemen and now Syria led by the Anglo-Americans as well as the French through NATO and their proxy states in the region of Saudi Arabia and Qatar.]

The Pentagon said the Russian military warned their American counterparts shortly before the bombing runs, giving U.S. warplanes time to get out of the way. "They informed us they were coming through, and we ensured safety of flight as those bombers passed through the area and toward their target, and then when they passed out again," Army Colonel Christopher Garver told reporters at the Pentagon in a video conference from Baghdad. "They did not impact coalition operations in either Iraq or Syria during the time."
